U.S.' Gates scoffs at Russian warnings to Poland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Pentagon chief Robert Gates dismissed as "empty rhetoric" on Sunday Russian warnings that Moscow would target Poland for a possible military strike because Warsaw agreed to host part of a U.S. missile shield.
"Russia is not going to launch nuclear missiles at anybody," Defense Secretary Gates said on ABC News' "This Week." "The Poles know that. We know it."
Col-General Anatoliy Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the Russian general staff, told Interfax on Friday that Russian military doctrine would allow for a possible nuclear strike, after Warsaw agreed to deploy 10 interceptors at a site in Poland as part of the missile shield.
This was "strident rhetoric and probably fairly empty rhetoric," said Gates, a former CIA director and expert on Russia.
"I'm not quite sure why this deputy chief of staff felt compelled to make those kinds of threats," Gates said, adding that the threat was a throwback to the days of the old Soviet Union, when Moscow was Poland's overlord in the Warsaw Pact.

If it's so unproven Mr. Obama, why would a Soviet General threaten Poland with a nuclear strike for deploying it???
What we are seeing happen here is John McCain's plan, that he spoke of immediately out of the shoot, and which Bush also announced, being implemented and saving Georgia.
Send more and send them now, and some to georgia, with pilots to fly them as well. I cannot believe that those pieces of s-crap Russian tanks were not all taken out by ied’s. Has the CIA been on vacation as normal.
When the general public sees danger, as in Georgia, they will see McCain's steadfast commitment to freedom as the only way to turn.
Very good point. It is clear that their reaction was planned well in advance and I would surely like to know if the Obamination's weakness was a factor in the decision as to how far they thought they could go.
i am really wondering whether our CIA has been infiltrated....Guess I will just have to wait for the next TV season of “ 24”.
What the Georgians really needed was JACK BAUER!!!
We have not yet used our greatest weapon...Wall St. It is time to let the Rooskies know who holds all the cards in this poker game. It is time to get every American bank, mutual fund, insurance company, foundation and every other institution to start selling every Russian stock that we own. Choke the Rooskies in billions of overnight losses and convince the Europeans to do the same. Let the Rooskies know that if you want to be a bully, there is not a single place on earth outside of Russia to park your rubles!
Putin definitely wants Obama to win the election, since Obama still has training wheels on his bicycle. What we need to counter Russia is another Ronald Reagan, who was not afraid to label the USSR as the “Evil Empire”. The Soviets (Russians, whatever) only seem to understand the threat of force.
The Russians would be insane if they attacked Poland. It would prompt an immediate retaliation by NATO against Russia. AS IN, Moscow would be pounded into oblivion. Unless of course Americans are dumb enough to elect Obama, who would simply let the Russians take over.
McCain is the only real choice we have as next President.
I believe the Russians were taking advantage of what they perceived to be a very weakened administration followed by a spineless, naive replacement.
Oh, did I mention how much I hate the media? Selfish, lying bastards (and I mean that in the nicest way).
Anyway, if anybody in the west have had any doubts so far about true intentions of the Russians, then the things they say in these days may lay all their doubts to rest.
Russia does not afraid the Shield, Russia loses its chance to regain empire. Poland alone would probably lose a military conflict with Russia. However, with US troops on the Polish territory Russia may only dream about conquering Poland. The threat of immediate US response in case of war is the only reason the Russian generals are so angry with the U.S.-Polish treaty. Farewell to Red Empire forever!
Another profound rhetorical question crying out to be answered by someone trying to claim-jump the Presidency!!!
Hate to mention this but when it comes to soft power, Russia, and its consideable oil reserves, has US over a barrel. And seeing as they supply Europe with upwards of 40% of their energy needs, its unlikely they’ll be of much assistance. Meanwhile our armed forces are somewhat busy these days in Iraq and Afghanistan defending us.
I think that's a good premise.
In 1961, John Kennedy and Jackie met Nikita Krushchev in Vienna. The Russian leader sized Kennedy up as weak. American missiles in Turkey had been a burr under the Russians' saddle. So to counter the Turkish missiles, Nikita took the chance that Kennedy would do nothing and started placing Russian nuclear missiles in Cuba as a counter move.
That almost started a nuclear war, based on Krushchev's misreading of JFK's temperament. Or maybe JFK was finally matured by the open possibility of nuclear war on our soil .
I don't think we can afford to choose a leader whose idea of countering tough talk and possible tough actions on the part of putative enemies is to sit down and try to play pat-a-cake with them.
Read the papers; the Russkies are threatening to target Poland with nuclear weapons.
I'm too old to want this sort of crap back again to plague my children, grandkids and great-grandkids. Reagan shut it down. But any perceived weakness on our part is likely to bring it to life again.
I simply don't believe that Putin or his generals are likely to mistake what sort of man John McCain is.
Thank you for the idea. I will look into shorting the Russian etf.
