Riding to war in Georgia alongside a bloodthirsty and vengeful gunman, Mark Franchetti saw at first hand how one small conflict in a faraway country led to a superpower confrontation
Vadim, a South Ossetian militiaman, raced through the deserted Georgian streets, a Soviet Makarov pistol in one hand and a Kalashnikov in the other. Dishevelled, unshaven and wild-eyed, he was searching for someone to kill. For the first time in 10 years he had crossed the border from his secessionist province and reached Gori, a town well inside Georgian territory, hours after it had been taken by Russian soldiers.
Wounded in the fighting, he had a gaping bullet hole in his upper thigh; but the pain only fuelled his thirst for revenge. As I sat by his side, he drove his battered Lada at high speed through Goris bombed-out centre, often screeching to a halt to scour the side streets and buildings in search of defeated Georgian soldiers.
This has been building up for years, he said. I knew it would happen and Ive been waiting for this moment for a long time. If I see a Georgian soldier Ill shoot his brains out. Theyre dogs.
As heavy artillery rounds exploded on the edge of town, we came across other civilian cars and minivans with Russian numberplates crammed with Vadims fellow South Ossetian militiamen. Like Vadim, who was in a tattered camouflage uniform and white trainers, they looked wild and menacing. They wore white armbands to identify them to the Russian army as friendly forces.

Maybe they could raise money with a CD of Georgorian chants?
"If I see a Georgian soldier I'll shoot his brains out. They're dogs."
Nice that journalists are embedded among the terrorist forces as well. Thanks Ernest.

Terrorists driving around in cars looking to kill and rape civilians, planting roadside bombs. Impressive allies for the Russians.

No different than Czar Putin’s allies in Iran, who have been part of the “insurgency” in Iraq for over a year. In fact, I would be surprised if Al Quds wasn’t significantly funded with Russian petro-rubbles.

So now the reporting turns from the Neo Sovs to some S. Ossettian renegade lunatic?
Sounds like a news report from Philadelphia.

Is Czar Putin insane enough to use the Ossettian/Sundentan ruse and start a war with Ukraine? That’s a country with a 50 million population, a couple hundred thousand military, similar miltech, and Western backing including training. I’m afraid he is, but that will be a war the likes of which we haven’t seen since WWII. Scary, very scary.

Vladimr Putin at his finest... Being a Premier of a country that supposedly doesn't exist anymore.

The thing is that 40% of the population of the Ukraine support Russia, and another 15% (mostly pro-Russian/pro Soviet Ukrainians) oppose NATO membership. So, if Russia does invade Ukraine, it will be in the pretext of a civil war

The thing is that 40% of the population of the Ukraine support Russia, and another 15% (mostly pro-Russian/pro Soviet Ukrainians) oppose NATO membership. So, if Russia does invade Ukraine, it will be in the pretext of a civil war A recent poll I saw said that about 32% of Ukraine supports NATO membership and about 25% oppose it.
Also I believe your 40% supporting Russia is too high. Only three Ukraine districts have a majority ethnic Russians.

The Russians will probably leave Georgia proper, at least those that are visible, once they fully pay back the Georgian population for their lack of faith.
Putin's gang probably want to make sure the place is left in such shambles that we may think twice about any NATO alliance. If they have nothing to offer NATO, then why bother proceeding with any firm plans to integrate them into it.
Perhaps that is why Merkel finally came around on the issue. She figures it won't happen in the long run. As for France. Who knows. Obviously they are not a part of NATO.

Perhaps the President and the Congress will have the guts to start sending significant signals to the Russians all major business with them will be reevaluated. It is clear the Russians are finally showing their hand.
