Dave 'Mudcat' Saunders: Barack Obama's elitist campaign alienates South
Times Online ^ | August 18, 2008 | Tom Baldwin and Matt Spence

The sea of shining, hope-filled faces that routinely flood Barack Obama's rallies would be an alien environment for the grizzled features and tobacco-stained temperament of Dave “Mudcat” Saunders.

His preferred habitat is up a tree gunning down deer or on the mud flats — which lent him their name — catching catfish, part of an endless struggle with Appalachian wildlife.

Along with his Confederate flag bedspread, the stag heads on his walls, his preference for profanity over punctuation, he would horrify what he calls the “northeastern elitist, Metropolitan Opera wing of the Democrats”.

But, as one of the party's few (some say only) rural strategists, this might just be part of Mr Obama's problem.

I don’t understand why the Dims keep nominating an elitist, Ivy-League graduate that look down upon middle and working class voters. Let’s see: Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, Kerry, and God willing, Obama. The Dims who won were Southerners and somewhat down-to-earth type (at least when they were elected): Carter and Clinton.

Inside every rural Republican is a rural Democrat begging to get out.

Hard to see how one man can be wrong about so much. Oh, yeah, he's a Demorat himself. He seems to think he speaks for most Southerners. Well, not this one, and not many that I know of.

Note the part about the guy’s confederate flag.

This is what the stupid MSM thinks all of us are like who live in flyover country and are to any extent politically or socially conservative.

That’s because they’re part of the same elitism of Obama and the rest of the list of recent Dem candidates.

Just another jackass that enjoys fawning attention from the rat because he is half crazy. But he is all wrong.

I bet they had to search far and wide to find this schmuck to reaffirm their stereotype of southern people.

Yeah, he’s a buffoon, but he’s not totally stupid. Didn’t Born Idiot hire ol’ Mudcat for his Senate run, and it worked?

The point’s well made, even though Mudcat’s a walking talking stereotype—Southern white ‘Rat voters don’t like voting for northeastern suit-wearing snobby-ass big-city liberals. If Obama was not The Halfrican, and thus assured of winning 95%+ of the black vote, he’d be staring squarely at a Dukakis-level ass-kicking in the South.

Mudcat wasn’t the deciding factor in the Webb/Allen race.

As for Mudcat’s point...even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then.
