Denver archbishop not among Democrats' invited clerics
Wash Times ^ | August 19, 2008 | Julia Duin

Democrats have invited more than two dozen religious leaders to pray or speak at their upcoming conventioin with a notable exception: Denver Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, a policy wonk and the leader of Colorado's largest religious denomination.

Several Catholics, including former Colorado state Sen. Polly Baca, "Dead Man Walking" author Sister Helen Prejean, social justice lobbyist Sister Catherine Pinkerton and Pepperdine University professor Douglas W. Kmiec, are on the program.

Organizers are also flying in Greek Orthodox Archbishop Demetrios from New York to give the opening prayer Wednesday.

But Archbishop Chaput's only contact with the convention has been a meeting with Leah Daughtry, chief executive officer of the convention and a Pentecostal pastor, and an invitation to attend the event as an observer.

Raymond Flynn, the Democratic mayor of Boston for 10 years before being named ambassador to the Vatican during the Clinton administration, said not inviting the archbishop to pray or speak was "a serious oversight" that Democratic leaders should correct.

"Chaput is one of the most respected leaders of the Catholic Church in America," he said. "His record is a strong commitment to social and economic justice and the principles of the Catholic faith. He's also a strong patriot.

"Pro-life Democrats who are proud Catholics like myself feel this is an insult to our values."

"The party," he added, "should be aware there are strong pro-life people who are politically successful."

Archbishop Chaput, the leader of 385,000 Catholics in the Denver area, said he was not taking the omission personally.

"I'm happy to see they are having prayer at their sessions," Archbishop Chaput said Monday, "and they have a right to choose whom they want to do that."

" . . . Pepperdine University professor Douglas W. Kmiec . . . "

This must be his 30 pieces of silver.

Considering that one-quarter of the U.S. Senate and a majority of the U.S. Supreme Court justices are Catholic, "you'd think that on issues like abortion," he said, "the country would be standing in a different place than it does."

Exactly! I wish Bishop Chaput would have a little chat with Kmiec. ;-)

An invitation to the Democrat convention? Is there a word that means, “I would have been throwing up, but I couldn’t because I’d been bored into a catatonic state?”

I’m starting to think “malignant brain tumor” about Mr. Kmiec.

Good. If he’d been invited and agreed to go, I’d never have trusted him again.

Sister Helen Prejean, social justice lobbyist Sister Catherine Pinkerton ..

Both about as Catholic as Father Pfegher.

They both feel cozy and comfortable amongst the pro-baby murdering Democrats.

Dear AmericanMother,

“This must be his 30 pieces of silver.”

You think he sold out for that little? A lousy appearance at a political convention? I was thinking he'd been offered at least six figures from the Snob-ama folks. But 15 minutes of fame?? Yikes!

I was kinda hoping he'd asked more for his soul than that.

Have you read C.S. Lewis's That Hideous Strength?

People sell out for much less in tangible benefits.

It's the intangibles that really are the payoff -- the feeling of being in the "in crowd", the newspaper interviews, the pleasant familiarity among the celebrities, the praise from People Who Matter.

The VIP invite just sets the seal on all that. The ultimate price, however, may be higher than he realizes.

Any "Catholic" who supports a candidate who votes in favor of actual infanticide . . . words fail me.

Dear Tax-chick,

If Archbishop Chaput had been invited and if he'd have attended and offered a prayer, I'd have waited to see what he said. What would you think if he prayed thusly, on national television:

“God our Father, we thank You for our presence here. We are grateful to You for the breath that we breathe, and that no one slaughtered us in our mother's womb before we could draw even our first breath. We ask You to enlighten the darkened hearts of those who believe that the direct, intentional slaughter of innocents somehow represents a ‘solution’ to some of life's problems, and of those who believe that a society may call itself just even as it legally permits the killing of unborn children. We offer this prayer to You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.”

I wouldn't put such a prayer past him. Which is perhaps why he wasn't invited. ;-)

I hope his Excellency realizes what a great testimony this is to his probity and faithful courage.

Sr. Helen is horrified at the thought of sick savage rapist/killers being put to death. Is she also pro life when it comes to the unborn? If she is then she’s got a funny way of showing it.

He could have gone as a 'voice crying in the wilderness'.

Bet the Dems were afraid he would call them on their crimes without fear or favor - and that's why he wasn't invited.

Cowards. They don't even have the courage of their evil convictions.

Dear AnAmericanMother,

I suppose you're right.

It's just that when I think of selling out, I'm thinking nine or 10 figures. At the end of it all, I wanna be able to buy my own little country, and cancel any extradition treaties.

;-)

Isn’t Kmiec the one who came out with the pro-abort Catholic piece yesterday? The Dems can have him. That was a really disgusting piece.

LOL!

I think there are some small islands in the Caribbean that are for sale. But then you have to have a police force and/or army to keep away the drug smugglers . . . . somehow it just doesn't seem worth the trouble.

That's right.

I was speculating that this was the price for his apostacy.

If he's in Abp Chaput's diocese, I hope he excommunicates him.

You have to factor in inflation.

No she isn't. Prejean is about as Catholic as Calypso Louie.
