Skip to comments.Greeley IDs The Bad Guys: Veterans, Crackers, Sox Fans

Andrew Greeley's column in today's Chicago Sun-Times is "American warmongers excel at talking a good game." Greeley's writings are often unintentionally amusing, filled with the sort of kneejerk liberalism we'd expect from a Barack Obama contributor. This morning's article is typically hilarious:
If we chant "USA!" Often enough, sing God "Bless American!" fervently enough, wear flag pins, fly the flag in front of our house and croak the national anthem loudly enough, we will win victory and honor our dead heroes.
Who are those who reject compromise of a useless and criminally deadly war like Iraq? They are the blusterers, members of "veteran's organizations," mountain folk, crackers, West Texans, blue collar workers, evangelical clergy, neo-cons, Republicans, white ethnics, Sox fans, folks who want Cardinal George to "get rid" of Father Pfleger, those who tell you with a straight face that the country isn't ready yet for a black president and that the United States must rid itself of "illegal aliens." (I hasten to add that all these groups number some men and women who are innocent of bellicose patriotism.)
There's something about the American flag that drives liberals loonier than usual. It certainly must irritate them that candidate Obama has been forced to sport a flag pin just to fool the crackers, the blue collar workers, etc.
I'm not certain why he placed quotation marks around "veteran's organizations." Is that not what they are called? The apostrophe, of course, is misplaced, but maybe we shouldn't expect too much from a PhD.
Using the marks with "illegal aliens" is more obvious. The correct term is undocumented workers. Everyone knows that except for white ethnics, mountain folk, evangelical clergy, etc.
A nice touch is Greeley's hastening to add that "some men and women" in the groups he's identified are innocent of the charges he levels. Even Sox fans. How warm. How understanding. How compassionate.
Greeley writes commentary and is entitled, obviously, to his opinion. At the same time, I think it's fair to ask how many other Obama supporters view matters in the same light - and terms - as he does.
Greeley is a Cubs fan!!!
Usually a sign of severe emotional distress.
aHHHH, the “immoral left” calling names again.......sounds like a child in kindergarden who just can’t get his way.
Keep talking Greely. Is this the Catholic priest posing as a journalist?
Hey F*** Y** you Son of a *****
BTW, this year’s the year!
Hey, I resemble that remark!
I've never seen anything bring out the America haters like those flags.
Or a journalist posing as a priest.
Where have we heard that before?
Even the Cubs don’t deserve the likes of him.
Sorry, every team's entitled to a bad century now and then.
This will require some serious contemplation.
LOL...as a West Texan/white ethnic/conservative/evangelical I plead guilty to this loon’s charge of patriotism.
How patriotic that we allow an idiot of this magnitude the freedom to convey his lunacy in print! In many less patriotic countries, enemies of the country such as he is would be locked up and never heard from again.
If a white conservative wrote a piece blasting veterans, blacks, inner city hoodies, Vermonters like that he would not only be fired but be offered up to the gods of the left for a public lynching. Greely should be fired for this piece of hatred.
You still have time to be a Sox fan!
Ah, let him jabber. He’s preaching to the choir and showing undecided folks how Lefties “think.”
As a kid living in Atlanta, I went to baseball games in Ponce de Leon Park, home of the Atlanta Crackers AAA farm team of the Braves. Years before there was a champion Atlanta Black Crackers team in the Negro League.
Atlanta is a transportation hub situated at the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains. Too hard to get a train over the mountains so they came around to Terminus which became Marthesville which became Atlanta. The trains drew a lot of wagon traffic for loading and offloading.
Cracker refers to the mule skinners cracking thier whips. Pretty synonymous with Teamster. So when some idiot calls me a cracker I say thank you and proud of it.
And now you know the rest of the story.
Thanks for the lesson.

First, he insults 90% of America, then apologizes with “if I have offended anybody”. This jerk with a collar has been spewing hatred since the 60’s. He is the poster boy for Liberation theology, as prcticed by Liberals. Grow up already - or get a new gig. The old one is getting mighty thin.
And before anybody gets in an uproar, I do not consider him a “priest in good standing. Not with his views on the papacy, celibacy, contraception and dogma.
Maybe he could pastor at Jeremiah Wright's church
If you follow the link to Greeley’s complete article, there are comments there from readers. While there are some comments left by syncopants, quite a few readers are ripping Greeley a new one. It’s quite
MSM at your service.
“If we chant “USA!” Often enough, sing God “Bless American!” fervently enough, wear flag pins, fly the flag in front of our house and croak the national anthem loudly enough, we will win victory and honor our dead heroes.”
Yeah, that’s right. Why not try it some time. Try singing “God Bless America” FERVENTLY. Try meaning what you sing. You might find yourself strangely moved.
There is also a Cracker horse from Florida. Supposed to be very good natured. Makes sense that the term cracker would go with the whip regardless of the vocation, cowboy or teamster. Bet a lot of cowboys switched to wagon drivers as they got older. Still working with horses but a wider seat.
My Georgia Bulldogs will be doing some “cracking” in Florida this year too!
Go Gators, you know Gators just love dawgs!!!
Greeley never really liked Pope John Paul II, and he is certainly not a fan of Pope Benedict XVI. Greeley thinks they are both “Too Catholic”.
But does he know the words?
Great, that’s just what I need.
No, it's a deranged old liver-spot masquerading as a "Catholic" priest, posing as a journalist.
When’s the next Crosstown Classic?
Things can happen underneath the viaduct on 35th Street. It’s like the Roach Motel; Cubs fans check in, but they never check out.
Father Greeley is like the loudmouthed drunk who after getting thrown out of the bar for the nth time keeps returning to babble some more inanities.
