Independents, women and Wayne County voters helped boost Democrat Barack Obama to a 7-point lead over Republican John McCain in the presidential race in Michigan, according to a Detroit Free Press-Local 4 Michigan Poll conducted this week. Obama's 46% to 39% statewide advantage is especially aided by a 39-point bulge among voters in Wayne County, including Detroit. Elsewhere in metro Detroit and outstate, Sens. McCain and Obama are virtually tied, according to the poll of 600 likely voters. Twelve percent are undecided and 3% support third-party candidates. Obama has significantly more support among voters younger than 35 and an 11-point lead among women statewide. Among men, the two candidates are virtually tied. Several other recent polls had shown the race tightening in Michigan, which is among a half dozen or so battleground states expected to decide the presidential race. The state has 17 electoral votes.

Michigan has strong racial tension in the Detroit area, but has been in an economic depression for some time. It depends on whether one votes on the (local) economy for the socialist, or one votes on their racial hangups for the moderate.

I think McCain could win Michigan but he is going to have to run one hell of an attack machine there to do it. The message I’d be running in places like Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania is one that slams the Democrats for their over regulation and threats of high taxation which is driving companies out of state and out of the country. McCain should adopt and trumpet ideas that help create a pro-business environment and state he will work with governors to help them create business friendly solutions to their problems like promoting tax breaks to keep companies here at home. I’d even promote a new start program to let people deduct the cost of relocation for a new job and the first down payment on a new apartment etc so that people can have the flexibility to move and go where the jobs and recoup that cost.

There are a lot of creative ideas to help people better survive in the modern economy. He should also hit the inner cities with school choice, charter schools, and merit pay to make sure our kids have access to the best schools regardless of color. I know across this nation many kids are being segregated into school districts putting poorer minorities into schools designed to fail. If John McCain talks this issue with conviction. He can win votes. It is also important in the Hispanic community.

I’d also recommend John McCain spend time in churches speaking of his convictions and I’d bring up the ACLU over and over again. There is a lot of opportunity for Republicans to win but you need to make the case. You need to differentiate. Here’s where I stand, here is where he stands the most liberal senator in the Senate and 86% rating from the ACLU.

I’d make a commercial called Radicals. Tie in Ayers but list the the other radical groups he is associated with and who support him and who are attending the Democrat convention.
It would be perfect to run during the convention because the current crop of Democrats are the most radically liberal since the left first took over the Democrat party.

John McCain needs to continue to run as a archetypal Hero.
I’d even make a commercial. Protecting the innocent fighting for the weak...on and on. It is those archetypes that are at play. They stick in people’s minds and stand out.

Name me one state that Palin will help carry outside of Alaska and maybe not even Alaska? Hmmmmm? She is a lightweight unknown.

Is “Wayne County voters” just a cute way for TIME magazine to refer to black voters in Detroit, or am I missing something?

She probably is (Puma). The BO kooks pratically shouted Hillarys supporters into a corner on DU and they appear to be mad. What I can find out on Palin record looks good but not much out there right now.

While I dont think she would hurt the ticket I dont show her helping to carry and state. Reason, my money right now is Hilliary will be on the ticket.

"New Jersey Independents" are largely Democrats who don't want to fill out the entire form. NJ actually has more independents than members of either party, but they are operationally democratic.

If the state made it as simple as checking a box at the top, the Dems would have the largest total.

Rasmussen: McCain up 41-37 with Indies in Michigan

PPP (D): Obama up 42-38 with Indies in Michigan.

Quinniapiac: McCain up 44-41 with Indies in Michigan.

Detroit News: McCain up 4 (no firm number) with Indies in Michigan.

This poll, Obama up 17 with Indies in Michigan.

Again, seems very, very suspicious to me.

GA is like that as well. Since we threw Carter out we have been voting more and more Rep on the national scene every year. But locally is die hard Dem 100%.

So in the primaries if I want to actually vote I have to change my registration to Dem and yes I raise he ll.

The ladies don't know what to think when I tell them I am being discriminated against(jokingly of course).

“most accurate poster but I can’t recall their name”

“they nailed Iowa Cuacus”

Who gives a rat’s ass about the D Iowa caucus?

The most accurate pollster all-time is Gallup. They lean towards the Dems.

In the last 10 years Rasmussen has been the most accurate. He leans toward the Republicans.

Both Gallup and Rasmussen have been way off in a given election but overall they have been the best.

That is what we should look at.

In the 2006 elections, the governor of MI won independents by exactly 17 points. Its not too far of a stretch to think that another dem could do the same.

No, not too far a stretch to think it is possible. I'm just very skeptical that it is so far out of whack with every other pollster out there.

To win Michigan, McCain needs 55-60% of the White vote to go along with 8-10% of the black vote. Not an easy thing to do. That is why Barack is favored, but definitely not impossible.

Welcome to FR by the way.

Please beware of soft-shoe propaganda being posted here.

It would serve the left well to convince you that McCain “will probably lose”.

Because you are hopeful, even a little anxious, you are more susceptible to them trying to put small dents in your confidence—the left is ingenious when it comes to breaking down confidence in human beings.

I don’t know much about maccaca but please stay alert and don’t assume the premise is reality just because it is posted here at FreeRepublic.

This article came from Time.com with the help from CNN—a big RED flag from the get-go.

Hey! Thanks for the reassurance!

I was afraid all this negativity surrounding the Messiah's prospects might buffalo the supers into forcing him to choose the Hildebeest as VP (not that she'd accept) or maybe even into stealing the nomination for her (that would be bad: popcorn is fattening! plate glass is expensive!).

Yes, choose Sarah Palin! Give the PUMAs an alternative!
