AP) -- Nine polar bears were observed in one day swimming in open ocean off Alaska's northwest coast, an increase from previous surveys that may indicate warming conditions are forcing bears to make riskier, long-distance swims to stable sea ice or land.

""Polar bears can swim quite well, but they are not aquatic animals," he said. "Their home is on the surface of the ice."Maybe he needs to go tell them that.
MAYBE these polar bears need counseling for their risky behavior...

Maybe they’re just Michael Phelps’ fans.

Clark said the animals' origin and destination could not be known without radio collar monitoring. Translation: We need millions of dollars so we can monitor this situation for you.

Folks, the liberals never cease to amaze me. This is a non story. The global warming crowd is truly nuts.

“Only further research can tell the effect of greater swimming distances on polar bear populations, he said.”
As he held up his application for another grant.

The capitalist in me sees a way of making a little money here.
Catch a couple of seals, put a big barb hook on them with 1000 lb line and then let people fight them from the chair.
Strictly catch and release of course, but that release part might be a little tricky...

The bears will adapt. The few who don’t will die. Polar bear numbers have increased and I don’t believe they’re in any imminent danger of becoming extinct.

Evolution tends to weed out the least fittest members of the species. In this case, both fitness and intelligence apply.
The smart polar bears in Alaska know they are supposed to stay close to the coast starting in mid-August. They can stay out during July but by mid-August, it is time to move closer to or stay on the shore. The ice will be back by the end of September and the smart bears go back out again afterward.
It has been like this in Alaska for 13,000 years. That’s 4,300 generations which should have been enough to weed out the dumb polar bears.

Hell yes, I could cast that thing a country mile...
