Yet as I sat here watching the glorious fanfare that descended upon the Birds Nest in Beijing tonight, I could not help but be bothered by a few nagging questions which neither the humorous sight of Jackie Chan singing at the top of his lungs or the sound of a hundred fireworks could quell. These Olympic Games were truly remarkable; few can deny that. But now what? What happens after the last foreign Olympic athlete has boarded an airplane back to his home country?...

I wouldn’t be surprised if they invaded Taiwan within the next 12-24 months.
Just read a story this morning that many Chinese Farmers were ruined because the government diverted all the water to the Olympics in Bejing. Very nice.
It will be back to the normal everyday Communism and oppression of their people. By the way, this is the government that Obama endorses as the way America should look.
Sick bastards, all of them. Including Obama.
Least of all, what he's doing there.
What happened to the smog? I have not heard it mentioned since the games started.
I think they stopped talking about the smog. I think the Chinese decreed the subject was off-limits.
I saw one reporter early on in the games talking to a Chinese official, through a translator. And the Chinese official said that the hazy skies were due to humidity and moisture, not smog.
So there’s the Commie party line on that.
That is such a very dumb question. With a wink and a nod, they will leverage the good will of the “international community” to step up their brutal repression of state criminals...you know, those Christians and their ilk.
Certainly if Obama is elected they will test him. They will make some provocative moves and see how he reacts. If he doesn't do anything, they will take that as a "go ahead". I will probably look out my window one morning and see them falling from the sky
Will the Red Chinese Gov’t have a new set of political prisoners from which to harvest organs?
Don’t count on it. Most young people in China don’t even know about Tiananmen Square because it’s a banned topic in China.
I’ve personally met young Chinese students who come here for college who have no idea about June 4th 1989, and when shown the pictures are at a loss for words as to how something like that could happen and they could live there their whole lives and not know.
That’s why the internet censorship in China is so vigorously enforced. So they can continue to keep the people from the truth.
“I wouldnt be surprised if they invaded Taiwan within the next 12-24 months.”
I agree, especially if there’s a President Obama. I think you’ll see all our enemies go on the offensive - NK, Russia,Commies in S. America.
What’s interesting is that the Chinese government has taken a calculated risk by allowing so many English schools to pop up around China. After all, there is plenty of information about Tinanmen Square on the internet in English that can be accessed quite easily. But so far, the risk has paid off because it seems like most of my friends who are learning English have no interest in using this skill to access English information outside of China. It’s really too bad...
This isn't at all surprising. Most Chinese don't even read (Chinese language) news not approved by the Chinese government. Overseas Chinese tend to prefer Chinese propaganda over (what they are taught from an early age to think of as) foreign propaganda.
China is still a crappy country to live in. Despots still want to take over as much real estate and people as possible. Communism is still a system of legalized slavery. American liberals still think that Communism is a new idea even though it always fails and Obama wants to implement it. And Russia and the terrorists still hate the USA and want to kill us all. So in short, not a damn thing has changed.
I have never understood this starry-eyed attitude. For a developing country, the Olympics is basically a supersized sports franchise that demands the equivalent of half a dozen new stadiums just so it can conduct the competition once, maybe every 50 years. The nice thing about the major league franchises is that that they at least use the stadium to generate revenues every single year. I have got to wonder what the Chinese will end up doing with their new sporting facilities that is actually revenue-generating given that total Chinese Olympic expenditures were $40b and may have been as high as $60b.
On a brighter note, the government-funded Chinese sports machine spent only about $100m per Olympic gold medal over the last four years, whereas the revived government-funded Russian sports machine spent $200m per gold medal. Whether it makes sense for Chinese taxpayers to subsidize athletes is another matter. But then again, basking in reflected glory is an ancient Chinese custom - ancestors, athletes, what's the diff?
Hi. My Name China. I Cheat.
F’ U.
Here’s a three things that will happen now:
1- The Chinese gymnasts will be returned to their prisons, uh I mean training facilities, where they will prepare for the 2012 London Games.
2- Return to killing or imprisoning all domestic enemies of Mao’s Utopia.
3- Send a thank you card to NBC, for its sickeningly pro-China coverage of the Olympics.
