Pelosi on Natural Gas: Fossil Fuel or Not?
Wall Street Journal ^ | 8/24/08 | John D. McKinnon

Posted on 08/24/2008 3:22:31 PM PDT by DallasBiff

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s message on energy, already evolving in recent weeks, might have to evolve a little more.

On NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, the speaker twice seemed to suggest that natural gas – an energy source she favors – is not a fossil fuel.

“I believe in natural gas as a clean, cheap alternative to fossil fuels,” she said at one point. Natural gas “is cheap, abundant and clean compared to fossil fuels,” she said at another.

The speaker apparently was trying to contrast her support for expanded use of natural gas as a motor-vehicle fuel, and many Republicans’ preference for more domestic oil drilling — particularly through opening up more of the Outer Continental Shelf for exploration.

But according to naturalgas.org, an educational Web site maintained by the Natural Gas Supply Association, “natural gas is the cleanest of all the fossil fuels.”

Pelosi and her husband drew attention recently for their investment in T. Boone Pickens’s Clean Energy Fuels Corp., which markets compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas as a fuel for motor vehicles. Some leading Democrats, including Pelosi, have been eying legislation to encourage such uses of natural gas, as soaring gasoline prices have put pressure on Congress to do something. Amid steady pressure from Republicans, both Pelosi and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama also have signaled that they’re open to expanding offshore oil drilling, as long as it’s part of a comprehensive package that includes other energy alternatives.

Pelosi’s investment in Clean Energy – between $50,000 and $100,000 – is a tiny fraction of the speaker’s assets, as she pointed out on Sunday. “That’s not the point,” she added. “I’m investing in something I believe in.”

So let's see, Queen Nancy says that natural gas is not a fossil fuel, I guess next she will be saying that botox is not a vain beauty aid.

She is against exploration of natural gas. Many of the same areas with oil also contain natural gas.

I cannot understand this propensity for natural gas. I have nothing against natural gas or any other energy source. Natural gas prices have fluctuated wildingly. There is not world market for natural gas. Natural gas is used for electricity generation, a poor usage of a vital resource. The rats and NIMBY supporters are fighting against importing natural gas. We are going to replace high oil prices with high natural gas prices if Pelosi and TBone get their way.

My goodness, this is why the gas prices have jumped up in the last 18 months and no legislation of any relevance has passed the House, she is a complete imbecile. Is the rest of San Fran brain dead to keep voting in this moron in to office?

It is not just in this instance,
but I see many examples every day:
at work;
in my business dealings;
and in my personal life;
where people are put in charge of things
that they know absolutely nothing about.

It is actually quite strange.

I guess it resluts from
social promotions;
that “good ol’ boy” network;
and “affirmative action”
that causes it.

The entire political purpose of ideologies, is to promote people based on loyal adherence to the group-thought, without requiring anything of them, intellectually and individually, besides that loyal conformity. That is what they are for, and it is what they do. The number of mindless followers in the world being much greater than the number of people who think, it is also a highly effective political tactic. People hate having intelligence or merit required of themselves. 99 out of 100 know they would not qualify for anything, objectively.

There is a name for this. It is called the Peter Principle.

Read on, from Wikipedia:

The Peter Principle is the principle that "In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence." While formulated by Dr. Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull in their 1968 book The Peter Principle, a humorous treatise which also introduced the "salutary science of Hierarchiology", "inadvertently founded" by Peter, the principle has real validity. It holds that in a hierarchy, members are promoted so long as they work competently. Sooner or later they are promoted to a position at which they are no longer competent (their "level of incompetence"), and there they remain. Peter's Corollary states that "in time, every post tends to be occupied by an employee who is incompetent to carry out his duties" and adds that "work is accomplished by those employees who have not yet reached their level of incompetence".

These people are blinded by extreme environmentalism. Our cars burn gas very cleanly, and that is why there is not much said about pollution anymore. Now the focus is on C02, which is not a pollutant but is claimed to cause global warming. Burning natural gas creates C02 just like burning gasoline.

Is it politically incorrect to say this women is dumber than a box of rocks?

Russert, (God rest his Soul) is spinning in his grave that no one had a comeback on the fact that it is a fossil fuel, he would have caught that.

For years were heard about Cheney and Bush and being tied to Big Oil.

Da, sometimes the Gas is found with the oil, does this now make San-Fran-Nan a tool of "Big Gas"?

The 50k or 100K is just a small part of their net worth, Oh really, if so then how does that make able to relate to the little people and champion them.

Natural gas is from multiple sources.

Some of them are fossil, such as coal, but it also comes from deep within the core of the earth, where its production is not yet fully understood.

She did! This is clearly a ethics violation. She’s investing in energy generation she has direct power to enrich herself. This should be a huge issue.

It is my understanding that this is not improper.

Congressmen are allowed to call hearings, interview company officials for otherwise private insider trading information, and then place stock and/or bond trades based on that information.

That all is something that isn't bandied about too much. Wonder why?

I cannot understand this propensity for natural gas.

I believe it's based on the fact that the combustion of CH4 produces somewhat less CO2 per evolved BTU than the combustion of other hydrocarbons. ( 117,00 lbs/billion BTU versus 164,000 lbs for "oil" : NaturalGas.org )

This leads to the doctrine that it is a "cleaner alternative", and hence an "alternative fuel".

I had to shake my head when I heard her say that; what a dumb person. Natural gas here in SE NM almost always occurs with oil and is called casing-head gas. It used to be flared but now is captured and processed for pipeline transport or conversion into natural gas liquids. Power plants in the area operate completely on natural gas.

Yes I agree that combustion generates somewhat less CO2. Natural gas is in short supply however. Severe restrictions on oil extraction are also restrictions on natural gas exploration. Even in places where natural gas is extracted without oil extraction, the left tries to stop natural gas exploration.

My point is that natural gas should be used for its most efficient usages (heating) rather than promoted as an alternative to oil and coal. If natural gas was abundant, inexpensive, and easy to extract, oil and coal substitution would make sense. The left hates natural gas almost as much as oil and coal. If oil and coal are abandoned, the left will find plenty of reasons to dislike natural gas.

The whole thing of CO2 is a straw man. Just a diversion from the fact that we will be a society based on fossil fuels for some time to come. Or we will retreat to the dark ages. The latter of course the true goal of the loony left.
