'04 Biden Meet the Press: McCain great candidate for Kerry's VP; Would heal vicious national rift
NBC Meet the Press ^ | May 16, 2004 | Tim Russert

Posted on 08/25/2008 7:31:49 AM PDT by Notwithstanding

McCain: ...the quicker we turn the government of the Iraqi people over...the more it will be...insurgents verses the Iraqi government rather than the insurgents against us...I would certainly enter into the status of forces agreement so that we would know exactly the relationship between the U.S. military and new Iraqi government.

Russert: ...Biden?

Biden: About the same as John...

McCain: ...we should encourage more U.S. participation, but at this point I disagree with my friend Joe...We have to increase...troop strength...

Biden: I agree...

Russert: ...New York Times...headline: "Undeterred by McCain Denials, Some See Him as Kerry's No. 2. Despite weeks of steadfast rejections from...McCain...prominent Democrats are angling for him to run for vice president...

Russert: ...Biden, what do you think of...McCain [as Kerry's VP]?

Biden: ...McCain would be...great candidate for [VP]....We need to heal...red states and...blue states....This is a divided nation....I would still urge...Kerry to...call...McCain....I'd like to see you [McCain] president instead of the guy we have now....but you're a great senator...I think you'd also be doing a great service...I think it is a reflection of the desire of this country...and of people in both parties, to want to see this...vicious rift that exists in the nation healed, and John could go a long way to healing that rift...

Russert: ...Biden. McCain is out. Who is in?

Biden: I'm sticking with McCain. It's safer right now...there's a lot of qualified people...I think that's the single most important thing for people, when he or she is announced, say that person could be president.

Russert: What if...Kerry picked his vice president and also said, "I want...Biden for secretary of state and...McCain for secretary of defense?"

Biden: Well, if John will do it, I'll do it.

Russert: ...McCain, do we have a deal?

McCain: No, no. No, no, we don't have a deal.

And this same Biden wasted zero time going on the attack against McCain. I hope the Reps use this info accordingly.

This actually plays into the hands of the radical, scary as hell Obama campaign. They want to project normalcy. Biden provides this with his reaching across the aisle comments. The more “normal” this incredibly unusual Obama candidacy can appear, the more swing votes he can pluck. The focus needs to be back on Obama Mugabe, the smiling fellow that wants our bank account in order to send us a few million in inheritance. And then jail us if we answer the con.

How would they use it exactly? This discussion was 4 years old and criticism on this basis would be easily countered by claiming that McCain has in those 4 years changed and moved away from maverick (read: dem-enabling) and towards Bush policies in order to seek the Republican nomination.

It’s far different from taking Biden’s words against Obama just a few months ago in this election cycle. Nothing has changed since Biden said Obama wasn’t ready to lead and that’s why it was an effective ad.

What is sadder is that our party nominee was actually considered as the VP for John Kerry just four years in the past.

Can you find any statement by John McCain proving he ever considered accepting an offer to run as Kerry’s VP?

From the same interview:

McCain: I’ve said categorically—categorically, I will not be vice president of the United States. I will not be a candidate. And I mean that. I’m happy in the Senate. I’d like to maintain my role. I am a loyal Republican. I am supporting President Bush’s re-election. I am campaigning for it. And I’d like to mention one other thing. The bullet played in all these stories is John McCain is angry at President Bush about 2000. Look, that was four years ago. My constituents don’t want me to look back in anger. They want me to represent them. I work with President Bush on a lot of issues and I want him re-elected and I’m not looking back in anger at anything. That’s not what my constituents deserve. So I’m afraid this will not be the last conversation you and I have on this issue and I categorically say no, but I can only hope.

It doesn’t get any better than this.

And THEN, for an encore, when the Obamanation loses, the blacks and Hispanics in the ‘Rat Party blame the whites in the ‘Rat party for not supporting him and Hillary loses in 2012!!

There IS a God in Heaven!!

They would use it as Biden praising McCain and now attacking him. Four years doesn't change a person 180 degrees and anyone who cares to think about it understands that fact.

Biden's words going after Obama are easily countered by the fact they were running against each other to be the Dem nominee for the presidency.
