DENVER -- Stop wallowing, the primary election is over. That was the message House Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivered this morning even as she acknowledged that reconciliation between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton camps was not yet complete.
She told reporters before addressing the California delegation that women will be the key to beating John McCain, and she considered it a personal mission to get more women behind Obama.
A majority of women support Obama, according to recent polls, but recent polls also suggest as many as one in four Clinton supporters would vote for Republican presumptive nominee John McCain.
"There's a 20 percent gender gap already even before the convention,'' she said. "Even before the reconciliation we need.''
But she warned it's counterproductive "to keep wallowing'' over the primary results.
Media reports suggest Clinton, who will address the convention Tuesday night, will release her delegates and encourage them to vote for Obama. But it's unclear whether she would do it before or after the traditional roll call of the states.
Pelosi said she backed a state-by-state call, partly out of tradition and partly because Clinton deserved the recognition. Some Obama supporters want to scuttle the traditional roll call. But Pelosi, speaking of Clinton, she said, "Let's not spoil it by minimizing her contribution.''
