USCGC Dallas docks at Batumi, Georgia
GEORGIA CONFLICT 2008 ^ | August 27, 2008 | Jeff Head

AUGUST 27, 2008

The US Coast Guard Cutter, Dallas, docked at Batumi and began unloading its humanitarian supplies, ending speculation that the ship might first go to the port of Poti where Russian soldiers were blocking entrance to the port, and where Russian vessels of the Black Sea fleet were patrolling.

The Russians moved their six to eight vessels from a station in the vicinity of the Georgian port Poti into Abkhazian territorial waters, in possible anticipation that the US warships, USS McFaul and the USCGC Dallas might arrive, but also bolstered their fleet around the area. The Moscow, the Russian guided missile cruiser and flagship, visited Sevastopol over the weekend, reloaded armaments and supplies, and returned to sea immediately, Ukrainian naval intelligence sources reported..

This came in response to the continued NATO buildup of vessels in the area which now consist of vessels from the US, Spain, Canada, Germany, POland, and Turkey and could number as many as eighteen warships by the weekend when they would be strong enough to overpower the entire Russian Black Sea Fleet if necessary.

Isn’t there another thread that said they didn’t dock?

God bless them and protect them.

I’m glad to know the world is sending multiple vessels as well.

They didn’t dock at Poti. Instead, they docked further south at Batumi, which ended speculation that the Dallas might first dock at Poti.

Putin didn’t manage to provoke...so it will be interesting to see if he ups the ante by blockading Bat’umi next (once we leave port).

With 24 years active duty eating Coast Guard chow, I can guarantee you that the Coast Guard went Poti.

With 18 US and NATO warships coming into the area, we will probably keep that one open for the duration. Kind of a stalemate.

Poti is close to Abkhazian and the Russians vessels are patrolling up there. It's only about 50-60 miles.

A stalemate is what we want. Georgia gets more time to re-arm that way.

Agreed, as long as the stalemate leaves them enough country to do so. Currently...it does.

Not mines. Not yet.

...but it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if their props ran into a “tar pool” that gummed up the works and required them to retire back to Sevastapol.

Maybe it's just me, but does that CG Officer bear a resemblance to Captain Bligh? Check the profile...

This news just in:

All of the Wal-Marts across Alabama sold out of ammunition as of yesterday. A reliable source said that one of the purchasers commented that while Russia may have invaded Georgia, they sure as hell ain’t doin’ it to Alabama.
