Bill and Hillary grandstand their way into history
Financial Times (London) ^ | August 28, 2008 | Sally Bedell Smith

For nearly three full days, Bill and Hillary Clinton owned the Democratic National Convention – an extraordinary act of domination by the losers. But late on Wednesday night Barack Obama walked on stage to join Joe Biden, the vice-presidential nominee, and the mood changed with a snap. Mr Obama was tomorrow’s man, the first African-American nominated for America’s highest office by a major party. The Clintons and all their dramas suddenly seemed the stuff of history.

With their own goals in mind, the Clintons played their assigned roles – to heal the divisions they had helped to create. The Obama camp let them stay centre stage for what seemed like an eternity, but it was a Faustian pact. In return, they had to make peace and give him their full support. As they smoothed the way for him, they created a downward political arc for themselves. And, as almost always happens with the Clintons, they gave another intriguing glimpse of their unconventional marriage. In this final act, they were implicit rivals – for the applause of delegates, approval of television viewers and verdict of historians.

The suspense of the convention turned on the aggrieved Mrs Clinton supporters who threatened to sit on the sidelines in November or vote for Republican John McCain out of spite. In the last months of the primaries, Mrs Clinton had campaigned overtly as a feminist, finding common cause with women who felt passed over, sweeping in working-class men and older voters. When she lost, Mrs Clinton insisted that her supporters needed “catharsis”, prompting conspiratorial mutterings about a possible coup, floor fight or roll-call vote that would irretrievably damage Mr Obama.

As it turned out, she found her own catharsis in her prime-time speech, preceded by a glowing filmed tribute.

From what we have heard recently, Obama is not “African-American”. He is “Arab-American”. Supposedly, only less than 7% African.

A lot of people thought the Clintons would start WWIII at the convention if she wasn’t named the nominee; that they would totally destroy the Democrat Party if necessary. I still think they’ll sneak out as much dirt on Obama that can’t be tied directly to them having had a hand in as possible. IF Obama is elected and things go badly, as they did with Jimmy Carter and as they do every time with liberal policies, there is no way a Democrat candidate can win the Presidency in 2012. Another Republican administration would surely be painted as a “disaster” by the MSM, and then Hillary would be shoe-in.

My thoughts are that they both performed very well. Well enough to get her large campaign debt taken care of by Obama’s financiers.

Apparently the Clintons decided that if they pulled off a coup it would kill her chances of winning this time. Her only remaining shot is to see McCain elected, as you say it won’t matter what McCain does the media will paint him as the worst failure in history and leave the door wide open for a Democrat in 2012.

“My thoughts are that they both performed very well. Well enough to get her large campaign debt taken care of by Obama’s financiers. “

My thoughts exaclty.

I figure both speeches were worth about 30 million bucks.

Yep. You know the Clintons. They didn’t do anything out of the goodness of their hearts (there isn’t any).

I’m sure the deal was that Obama would help them with their debts.

What floored me was the way that Hillary let the audience clap forever before she attempted to stop it. The attention was as important to her as the money.

Why is not the McCain campaign pointing out the gigantic elephant in the room which the Democrats have not acknowledged: that on Clinton's watch, from 1992 to 2000, America was attacked by terrorists numerous times--including the 1993 Trade Center attack, the Cole, etc., and culminating in the 9/11 NYC attack by terrorists who had set up shop in America during those 8 years.

With all the criticisms of the Bush Administration no one in Denver has acknowledged that we have not been attacked under Bush/Cheney.

Clinton says that øbama is ready to lead. What a joke!

How soon we forget. Anyone that believes that needs to read this 2004 article from Front Page Magazine.

for the past eight years - bill clinton has been a paid lobbyist.

he got paid - probably in ways we’ll never know to “lobby” for obama on wednesday evening.

interesting the way bill, hillary’ and webb’s daughter were nowhere in sight on thursday.

Highlight of this silly week was last night when I couldn't find the Rapist of the PIAPS. As hard as they tried to take over the convention, it end up with all the spotlight on Obama...

The Rapist said he wouldn't be able to attend and I didn't see much of the PIAPS, if she was there. But their names were barely mentioned and if was almost like a democrat enema to see them purged from the celebration. It's a shame Obama allowed them to hijack as much of the convention as they did, but in the end they were like a big bowel movement, a lot of fuss but after it's over, quickly forgotten.

I could help but imagine wherever they were, they were sitting there enraged, as only someone as insanely selfish and insignificant as they are, could be. She, furious to see all the attention and adulation being spent on this upstart who stole her entitlement. He, full of puss and venom, as he blustered about this upstarts eloquence and ability to play the game, the way people are drawn to him unlike anything he ever experienced. Still deluding himself about his legacy, he's trying to convince himself that most American still consider him a great President. Of course the truth is, that most Americans consider him the brunt of late-night comic jokes about fooling around with women, cheating on your wife, being dishonest, etc..

That's the Rapist's legacy and as he sat there last night and watched the democrat party flush him down the toilet, one can only imagine how truly small and insignificant he showed himself to be.
