(CNN) – A leading House Democrat said Thursday John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is a "risky" move that could ultimately prove disastrous to the Republican prospects in November.
Meanwhile, a top Senate Democrat said the pick is a "Hail Mary pass" and a "roll of the dice," in what is the initial reactions from McCain's rival party.

This ugly wench with a huge nose (I don’t like being mean but she is really ugly) from Obambi’s camp is spinning so much and Martha McCallum is really giving it to her as to the experience factor between Palin and Bambi. The dems are trying to say that Palin is inexperienced!!! That is the pot calling the kettle black in a huge way...this is too funny and will piss women off because it does seem that since Bambi is a man HE is more qualified than a woman who is a Governor! The Hillary supporters have been pissed about sexism and this shows they have not learned their lesson. I hope they keep it up as it will help us to get more dems voting for our guy! They are running scared and they know their base is not fired up as they try to protray, they are divided and have lost a lot of the Hillary supporters. Some that said they were just going to stay home are now saying they want McCain, many of them are saying that they are done with the DNC and are saying nice stuff about the RNC. First, I'll point out that the State of Alaska owns the Prudhoe Bay oilfields and the oil companies who lease the fields are renters and not owners.
As renters, they are essentially business partners of Alaska, or contractors who have bid for the opportunity to use Alaska's resources.
Alaska, as owner of the property, has the right to raise the rent on the property as they see fit, or do anything else that will help Alaska - the owner - to maximize its profits.
The more Alaska maximizes the profits from the asset it owns, the less of a tax burden it has to place on the assets its citizens own.
So while the rent Alaska charges is called a "tax" it isn't quite the same as when a government taxes someone else's property to charge them for the privilege of using their own property.
In this case, Alaska is charging rent to the comapnies that want to use Alaska's property.
And, as a taxpayer, I think the best possible outcome is for a state executive to maximize the profits from a state asset to fund the state budget rather than tax my assets to fund the state budget.
BTW, your second "research" link does not discuss the oil field tax increase - but it does discuss the fuel tax decrease that Governor Palin put through to give relief to the Alaskan taxpayer.

I know;) just spent an hour reading the posts on one of the links upthread - every poster is soooooooo psyched about Palin and ready to donate & work to elect McCain-Palin. Some have dismissed the pro-choice issue as a non-issue - that they are no longer beholden to the Dems.
I believe McCain will be voted in by a landslide - his choice of Sarah Palin will demonstrate how much better he understands the American voter than *Obama bin Biden Time*
BTW, Here's the perfect McCain campaign response to any claim that Palin is inexperienced:
"Well, Sarah Palin is a first-term Governor. And Barack Obama is a first-term Senator. But I guess Obama must be more experienced than she is, because he's a man."

This morning, the talking heads on MSNBC were talking about Obama's "experience" with running a campaign for 18 months; Obama's "experience" with planning his Grand Oversees Tour; Obama's "experience" with arranging the events during his rally last night.
Obama should run for the office of events planner.

The message was supposed to be ‘change’ vs “same”. If they go after a woman Governor who has been 3000 miles away from DC as not experienced enough, even though she has more experience than Obama, they have destroyed their own campaign!!!
Regrettably, you are utterly incorrect.
The State of Alaska owns the mineral rights to all lands in the former federal territory of Alaska. That was in the original Statehood Act. As owner, the State leases exploration, development and production rights to private companies on various terms. And as the owner of the mineral rights it leases subject to royalty payments — an ownership share amounts of which vary and on terms which are perfectly normal for any land owner, public or private. The taxes, on the other hand, are imposed on the private companies and their production by the State of Alaska acting as sovereign.
The federal government has exactly the same system in place for federal lands and I daresay few here (I almost said “no one here” but I had to rethink that after reading a few of these posts) would argue that an increase in federal taxes on the offshore oil industry would be ‘okay’ because, after all, the federal government owns the oil in the first place, so it’s not really a tax increase.
As to the amount of the tax increase, focusing on the rate change is only a part of the story. Oil prices have historically been volatile, and from the late 1980’s until just a couple of years ago had been running at very low rates on inflation-adjusted bases. Of course nobody bled for the oil industry (nor should they have) because that’s what markets do. However, when you put a tax increase into place, as Governor Palin did, just when a counter-balancing (and almost certainly temporary, again on a long term inflation-adjusted basis) run up in prices takes place, you are taking the reinvestment money out of the pocket of industry and putting into the hands of the state government. And, as the cited sources point out, the rate at which you are taking those funds is at the level of billions of dollars per year.
If you value Palin’s position on abortion and gun rights more than you do her positions on economic policy, by all means, do so. But facts are facts and some folks here really don’t want to face them.

Nice try. I've been here since 3/98 and I am as conservative as they come. I really hope Gov. Palin works out for McCain but time will tell. She is a true conservative and she is VERY capable but she is also unknown.
