Dems say Palin is 'risky,' could be a disaster
CNN ^ | August 29, 2008 | Alexander Mooney

A leading House Democrat said Friday John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is a "risky" move that could ultimately prove disastrous to the Republican prospects in November.

Meanwhile, a top Senate Democrat said the pick is a "Hail Mary pass" and a "roll of the dice," in what is the initial reactions from McCain's rival party.

Speaking to South Carolina ETV Radio, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn likened the choice of Palin to Walter Mondale's choice of Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 and George H.W. Bush's pick of Dan Quayle in 1988. Both picks — relatively unknown political figures at the time — generated initial excitement but were ultimately deemed poor choices by many political observers.

"I think (her selection) would be something similar to Dan Quayle — Dan Quayle proved to be sort of an embarrassment as a campaigner, being thrust on a national stage like that could be very tough," Clyburn said. "Now Mondale tried to shake things up by going with Geraldine Ferraro, she proved to be a disaster as a running mate. And as a campaigner, she was absolutely awful."

"And so I just think that it is very risky for McCain to do this, but it may be all he has left," Clyburn also said.

In an issued statement, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Palin is significantly mismatched to Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden and said the prospect of her becoming president is "troubling."

This probably is not the time for Rats to be making any allusion to Catholicism.

She certainly was NOT awful! She just couldn't help Mondale's campaign.

These Democrats. They are SUCH SEXISTS.

I'm beginning to wonder if Biden will be eased out somehow and Hillary ushered in.

There is precedent for that....McGovern/Eagleton. Hey Joe, when the phone rings or they knock on your door....don't answer....bwahahahahahahaha!

didn’t palin say something about risk in her speech. Something about its always safer in politics to avoid risk. A boat in habor is safe, buts not why the boat was built

Only Bush won if I remember correctly.

Oh that’s right Bush/Quayle won! I love how these so-called journalists start opining about the future when they ain’t got anything else. Also, if Obama had had 1/2 the scrutiny that Quayle did Hillary would be the candidate.

I totally agree. Palin's nomination risks costing Obama the election, which the Dems feel would be a disaster. Got it.

You know when the various species of liberalis domesiticus start choir-howling in agony, you hit them where it hurts. This is a strategic blow to the Democratic party, and the fault lines from it may shatter the feminist side of the coalition. They can't hemorrhage women voters for long before their electoral chances completely bleed to death.

Read this next line and weep, Democrats: Every woman in your party will silently judge you for the lines of attack you use on Palin. If you go after her like you went after Hillary, those women will desert you for the Republicans.

Heh.

The other thing is that Free Republic is energized and motivated like I haven't seen it in months. Maybe years. McCain rolled the dice big time, and early indications are that he won big.

I think we are framing the discussion about experience incorrectly.

It is not about Palin.

It is about Obmama, he already discarded a woman with the experience of Hillary Clinton. She is not good enough.

Now Obama is claiming that Palin lacks experience.

Experience, has no impact Obama beliefs, it is that he finds all woman unqualified to be Pres or VP.

I love the comment about her being a dark horse, an unknown.

Who's the Democratic pick for President? How many knew him before the campaigning started?

Our VP has more experience than their Presidential candidate! At least her resume doesn't read: Slumlord and community organizer.

You can say EXACTLY the same thing about Obama's mismatch with McCain
