I wonder why Obama doesn’t just go to the Louisiana coast himself, raise his arms and make it go away.

Yeah. I know they have equipped the platforms to take Cat 3 plus, I just hope they hold.

Assuming they do, it's a great argument on the side of offshore drilling and the safety of same.

Remember, it was the oil platforms built by the eeeeevil oil companies that survived Katrina. The federally built levees failed.

If the GOP goes through with this silliness, they better have a very open, transparent and accurate accounting of every dollar donated and where it went. Any errors or murkiness will be exploited to the fullest. IMO, the GOP is opening itself up for a PR nightmare.

This is just plain STUPID.

I can see them postpone it, but they are basically giving up having a convention, when McCain needs to have people see the speeches that give reasons to vote for him. He is sacrificing his election chances and the whole country.

And just when the Republicans started to act like they actually want to win. This is NOT going to help.

Postpone, yes, if necessary — I can understand that.

But “substituting” a convention with “community work” is crazy.

Once again, the Republican Party is eager to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Gustav looking rather gnarly:

Sweet... This was a very good idea, and definitely goes along with McCain's campaign theme of "Country First".

Quite a contrast to former DNC Chairman Fowler laughing about a Cat 5 storm killing Americans... According to Fowler; "Proves God is on our side" & "It's all cool..."

The GOP Convention should go forward, sticking to the original plans as much as possible. Gov Jindel is handling matters in New Orleans and Louisiana. Republican Governors Charlie Crist in Florida, Haley Barbour in Mississippi, Bob Reily in Alabama, Sonny Perdue in Georgia and Rick Perry in Texas are the obvious main players in this game. Along with President Bush and FEMA.

Lets not overreact and maybe give the liberal establishment more ammunition to crack over the head of McCain's campaign. The outcome here could easily be a lose lose situation for the GOP.

Hmmm.....both Gustav AND Katrina hit or are going to hit New Orleans during the “Southern Decadence Festival”.

What is the southern decadence festival you ask?

Why it’s a lovely celebration and promotion of the deviant homosexual lifestyle.

I suggest that if the folks in this area wants to stop seeing these storms that they might stop having such pukefest’ before thier creator.

It’s a Category 5 storm headed for New Orleans... I’d say that constitutes a major crisis. But, I suppose we should just wait and see what happens, eh? Isn’t that what Blanco and Nagin did with Katrina?

See, this why I'm glad there are knowledgeable folks here at FR. I had no idea the folks with an alternative lifestyle were having a get together. Now I know for future years not to spend my labor day vacation in the Big Easy.

The last week has been the most politically astute I’ve seen in a long time. This idea is shrewd and will make it two weeks.

The Dems must be crying on their hookers’ shoulders right now.

i don't mean to be Machiavellian, it's just my nature but the RNC and MacPalin can turn this into a major opportunity the media won't be able to spin out of.

“You’re wrong on this. Imagine McCain and Palin on the ground in the areas most affected by the landfall of Gustav—it would have HUGE positive effect on public relations “

No, it wouldn’t. The Dems would make ads of how the Republicans are callously using tragedy for photo ops.

It's really a no win situation

Bingo! We have a winner. Thats exactly right. RNC was dealt a bad hand wrt convention timing. I'm not sure what they should do but it should NOT be BAU. They need to be bold and different and be sensitive to people's plight. Having lived along the coast I more than anyone realize hurricanes are a fact of life but this is high stakes politics. I just hope the best people are advising McCain on this. I'm skeptical about that. We'll see.

Maybe you should share a link to a relief organization for your fellow Floridians instead of just whining? Sorry, but how in the heck do you know that they are going to “ignore” it? If they did NOTHING to acknowledge that Gustav is going to hit during the convention (as you seem to want them to) how would THAT look? Partying while people are dying? Did the DNC even MENTION the flooding in Florida (serious question as I don’t know if they did).

The one thing I DO know is that the DNC promised protesters CLEAN DRINKABLE WATER at the convention, and didn’t deliver even with MONTHS of planning time. 54 people were taken to hospitals during Obama’s announcement of Biden in Springfield due to dehydration and Heat stroke related problems - why? Not enough water available - what water they did have was being sold for $2.00 per cup. And they have the nerve to say that Bush didn’t do enough to get water to the people in N.O. despite the incredible logistical challenges?

To ignore Gustav during the convention would not only be morally wrong, but political suicide.
