DENVER Ian Bowman-Henderson scraped together $300 cashing in his high school graduation checks to pay for a round-trip plane ticket from Cincinnati to Denver for the Democratic National Convention. But as the week wore on, he said he was not sure if the money had been well spent.
Mr. Bowman-Henderson, 19, and some other young voters who were part of the nucleus of Mr. Obamas presidential bid said the convention process had left them marginalized as more centrist views on issues like offshore drilling took hold.
We understand the politics of compromise and that Senator Obama has to be the president of everyone, not just the president of youth, Mr. Bowman-Henderson said. But we picked him because we didnt want the same kind of politics thats what set him apart.
Representative Kendrick B. Meek, Democrat of Florida, acknowledged that the Obama campaign would have to walk a tightrope to consolidate support among Democrats while reaching out to independents and Republicans.
And those efforts were further complicated with John McCains selection of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate. Governor Palin, at 44, lends the Republican ticket a youthful and historic feel. She may energize the conservative base of her party while also appealing to swing voters and younger Republicans.
This weekend, the Obama campaign is embarking on a nationwide voter registration drive, deploying an army of volunteers, many of whom are the senators youthful followers credited with swelling the voter rolls during the primary season.
If the youth presence at the Democratic convention was any sign, Mr. Obama could be on a path to repeat in the general election the electoral success he enjoyed among younger voters .

Cheers!
Apparently these young voters did not learn about the inherent evil of Marxism, or it’s history of failure in their public schools.
But we picked him because we didnt want the same kind of politics thats what set him apart.
Bwahahaha. And to prove he wasn't part of the "same old politics" Obama chose Biden. Memo to the Yutes: Reality Bites.
The Youth Vote is so disturbing. These are generally students who know absolutely nothing and are swayed by TV commercials and empty sayings.
For example, “The environment is dying and we can’t allow drilling!” No thought as to
1) is the environment really dying or is it bad science?
2) even if it is dying and the US does something about it, China Russia, Brazil, Japan, India and others are not going to sacrifice their economic growth because we do. They may SAY they are going to do something, but travel to those countries and you will see that they are polluted.
3) According to Gore, we have to sacrifice EVERYTHING to save the environment - but note that Gore isn’t sacrificing anything (still has a mansion, a jet, limos galore, etc)
4) the leaders of the CHANGE party are disingenuous and do things like say “We are going to take away things from you from the common good,” and then they stash their money overseas to avoid taxation and block any attempts to find out where there money is stored under the name of “personal freedom.”
No wonder youth can get so disillusioned.
-—Hes going to have to master the art of being able to keep individuals motivated, Mr. Meek said, so that they dont feel heartbroken because something they were told during the primary phase is something that hes going to have to take a different position on in the general election.
LMAO.
We were only pandering to you, kiddo, but vote for us anyway.
To borrow a phrase from Richard Hatch after getting blind sided on Survivor, Youth Of America, you’ve been bamboozled, but it’s not too late to open your eyes and see the light.
I figure people with hypenated last names think they are Spanish Royalty and like really really long names. Thus when little Mary Smith-Jones marries little Johny Johnson-Jackson their first child can be Caitlin Smith-Jones-Johnson-Jackson.
Despite the comments about his having to “scrape together” the funds and use his high school graduation checks (versus the more typical use of Daddy’s credit card or dipping into your blind trust) don’t change the fact that it’s still some kid with nothing better to spend his money on than flying out to be a bureaucrat’s cheerleader and listen to more rehashed socialist bromides.
Sorry NYT, but as a 22 year old who considers himself to be from the real world, I’m not the least bit interested in this brat’s story as I had very different priorities for my money (which, by the way, were funded by my paychecks).
Youthful idealism. Churchill was right.
Actually, Toesucker stole (w/o attribution, no less, rather Bidenesquely) that line from ol’ Snakehead, James Carville. Dates back to mid-2006, iirc.
I know of a gal who did this - she kept her last name and merged it in by hyphenating it with her married name. She did it to honor her father, whom she adored, and her children thus had hyphenated names.
Also, a certain young college student I know would be seriously offended to be considered a loser as a voter. That ‘loser’ started looked at Obama’s policies this summer and very quickly surmised it was Marxism. He’s voting McCain. He said it doesn’t have anything to do with being smart - it has to do with common sense. He also reminded me 3/4 of Americans don’t have it.
> Caitlin Smith-Jones-Johnson-Jackson
Caitlin Smith-Jones-Johnson-Jackson...sin-jen(St John)...son...min...son. (with apologies to A Fish Called Wanda).
No, Obama's no different from any other greasy politician. He only TOLD you he was different - and you believed his words, instead of looking for evidence that he truly WAS different.
The use of a hyphenated name for males seems to be a yuppy black thing.
It shows the lack of a strong father figure in a young man's life.
Not sure who his father is I guess. Seriously, probably imitating Hispanic custom.
When I was in fifth grade Clinton was elected. I credit everything that happened after that with helping me to become a conservative.
Of course it was well spent. Most "valuable lessons" in life cost way more than 300 dollars.
Face it, kid. You were being played for a fool and it only cost you a few hundred bucks. Now suck it up and go out there and make something of yourself. You don't need no stinking Barack Obama or Joe Biden to make your life worthwhile.
