Once promising Obama hit Rocky Mountain low
the Boston Herald ^ | September 1, 2008 | Michael Gerson

Posted on 09/01/2008 9:23:41 AM PDT by george76

The setting invited comparisons to John Kennedy. The anniversary invited comparisons to Martin Luther King. The stage invited comparisons to Zeus.

The remarks themselves invited comparisons to every Democratic stump speech of the last 20 years.

In substance, Barack Obama’s convention speech could easily have been given by Al Gore or John Kerry - and, in various forms, was given by Kerry and Gore. It was all in there: the lunchbox economic populism, based on the assumption that most Americans are filling their lunchboxes with scraps from dumpsters. The attacks on corporations, millionaires and other sinister job creators. The touching faith in the power of diplomacy.

By the last firework of the Democratic convention, Obama’s transformation was complete. He had systemically taken the advice of every cynical, hard-edged Democratic political consultant. Get rid of the airy, cerebral rhetoric. Pitch your message to the focus groups...

In the process, opportunities were lost. Obama said nothing interesting about race in America, at a moment when that might have been expected. He made no serious outreach to religious conservatives, something that now seems more like a ploy than a project. He offered no creative policy proposals that might transcend partisan divisions.

Obama seems determined to test the theory in full. The Democratic ticket consists of two of the most ideological liberals in the Senate. It includes no reasonable governor, no candidate with Southern roots, no member with a military background (for the first time in decades). And now it offers the purest message of partisan aggression and class resentment.

The only line I recall from the Big O’s speech is:

“And we’ll pay for these programs by closing loopholes...”

Now where have I heard THAT before? Oh yeah, every other Rat acceptance speech that I can remember.

And, they never raised revenues by closing loopholes. Nope. It’s never happened.

"The setting invited comparisons to John Kennedy (except for the tax-cutting). The anniversary invited comparisons to Martin Luther King (except for the Republican part). The stage invited comparisons to Zeus (or more like a Roman vomitorium).

Hi, george76:

Good catch on the Boston Herald article! What’s even cooler and more entertaining are the comments.

Obama laid a turn in a punchbowl with his long winded, liberal boilerplate tele-prompter reading and a lot of people are finally catching on.

Jack.

Obama said nothing interesting about race in America...

Because it's a big, almost intractable problem and he'll lose his maniac lib base if he offers any ideas of substance.

He made no serious outreach to religious conservatives...

As if. Please.

He offered no creative policy proposals that might transcend partisan divisions.

Y'all were expecting... He's a partisan hack who preaches things like talkplomacy as if Putin and Akma what's his name in Iran will be intimidated by some Chicago hack machine pol. Again, please.

***Surprisingly crisp assessment from an MSM source.

Who can trust any person who says he is a “Christian”, while carrying a picture of the Hindu “Monkey god” in his pocket? Obama was supposed to have received a gold plated “Monkey god” on the day before the Democratic Convention.

Just wait until it hits the news about Obama using crack cocaine, buying cocaine for a gay man, and having relationships with gay men when he was State Senator of Illinois in 1999!

But not to worry, it will mean NOTHING to his supporters!

Have the rest of you noticed how arrogant all the pictures you see on websites make Obama look? He always has that chin slightly lifted, giving you that “looked-down-on” feeling.

Someone needs to photoshop Obama's face onto that.

I'm tired of scrawny metrosexuals running for office.

Cheers!

Does anyone remember Obama promising 'equal pay for equal work'? This is liberal speak for taking so-called, 'pink collar' jobs, like receptionist, and mandating that they receive the same pay levels as 'blue collar' jobs, like construction. This is a very intrusive government step to take.

We need to make sure that every voter in America understands what he wants to do and what he means by equal pay for equal work. This is an old feminist wish list item from the 1970's women's lib movement, back from the grave.

Instead of a Greek temple the set reminded one comedy team of a set from Clash of the Titans:

Reportedly this line is from Bill Clinton’s speech before censoring:

Release the Kraken!

It won’t hit the news. The MSM is throughly in the tank for Obama- unless Hannity gets up enough nerve to report it.
