Past evidence boosts concern for Greenland icesheet: scientists

PARIS (AFP) - Scientists Sunday said they could no longer rule out a fast-track melting of the Greenland icesheet -- a prospect, once the preserve of doomsayers, that would see much of the world's coastline drowned by rising seas.

The researchers found that the great Laurentide icesheet which smothered much of North America during the last Ice Age melted far swifter than realised, dumping billions of tonnes of water into the ocean.

"The word 'glacial' used to imply that something was very slow," ...

..."This new evidence from the past, paired with our model for predicting future climate, indicates that 'glacial' is anything but slow. Past icesheets responded quickly to a changing climate, hinting at the potential for a similar response in the future." ...

... Then a big warming occurred, apparently caused by a slight orbital shift which increased radiation that the Earth received from the Sun. ...

And the cycle continues.

Take a glass of ice water, and see if the water level increases as the ice melts.

That applies to sea ice but not ice that’s on land.

Take a glass of water and add an ice cube. See if the water level rises.

If the ice on Greenland melting would be such a catastrophe...

Why is it called “Greenland”?

This is all crap. The ice melting at the North Pole is being more than offset by the increase of ice at the South Pole.

Take a glass of ice water, and see if the water level increases as the ice melts.

You're right, it stays at a constant level, but only if the ice is already floating in and supported by the water (like an iceberg). If, however, the ice is resting on and is supported by land, the melt water will ultimately increase the depth of the oceans. To use your example, it would be like holding the ice in your hand and letting the melt water drip into the glass.

GtG

Chicken Littles always overstep themselves and blow any credibility they may have ever had.

I mean, if one is actually dumb enough to admit up front that he is deliberately lying and misleading people, what makes him think any sober-minded person will take anything he says seriously?

Except that the melting ice is being offset by increasing ice elsewhere, such as the South Pole.

Why is it called "Greenland"?

I think the Norsemen dyed the glaciers green for St. Patrick's day.

Lets get through this winter before we start worrying about Greenland’s ice. My suggestion is to buy a fur coat - soon.

“All of you “global warming” people, please explain this:

So wouldn’t it be ironic if we have to start figuring out ways to cause global warming. Human caused global warming to help offset the negative consequences of another mini ice age that is.

Maybe God has been trying to help us better cope with the next mini ice age all along but the arrogant among us have been too blind to see it. Not that I even believe in the AGW theory, but if it is happening, then it’s part of the intelligent design behind the creation of the world and all life on it in my opinion. Part of God’s plan.

Al Gore thinks it was caused by prehistoric Americans driving SUVs.

No, no, it was caused by mastodon farts - I have it on good authority.

Of course, to prehistoric Americans, mastodons were SUVs.

What authority? Why, Ward Churchill, of course. As an Amerindian, he knows all about that sort of ... no, wait ...

Sure, chunks of ice are breaking off ice sheets all the time, it’s a natural process that is called calving. If the ice caps have been melting due to man made influences, than what is an airplane doing under 200 feet of ice and snow??
