With Palin feeding frenzy, proceed with caution
The San Francisco Chronicle ^ | September 2, 2008 | Debra J. Saunders

Posted on 09/02/2008 9:32:57 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Sarah Palin is different. Too different. Few Beltway insiders thought Republican nominee John McCain would pick her as his running mate. She is not a Washington staple, like the Democratic veep pick, Joe Biden, whose mistakes are established facts that are as worn as a pair of old shoes.

She is a runner - which is standard among modern politicians. She is a hunter - which is not.

She did not move up through the usual cursus honorum of the standard running mate added to a ticket to establish gravitas. McCain didn't need to weight his ticket. So he chose an upstart. He took a risk.

To the Washington press corps, that means she was "not vetted." This gives the press corps a grand excuse to tear Palin and her family into little, tiny pieces.

News reports question how voters might feel about a mother of five serving in the White House. Because Palin's elder son, Track, is about to be deployed to Iraq, she would not be raising five children in the vice president's residence. So why mention five? Because five is three too many. It's not the norm.

With a fisherman/oil-worker husband, a son in the military, and a daughter in high school about to start a family, Palin safely could be called "working class." Except that the cognoscenti don't know how to deal with real working-class people. They think Biden is working class - he must be, because he grew up in Scranton, Pa.

Debra Saunders is the token ‘conservative’ (actually ‘moderate’ — but she comes off as a right winger in that rag...).

What is it about this Palin that is drawing this kind of story? Something keeps telling me that you shouldn’t mess with her.

Even Crissy Matthews is backing off, so it isn't just the smart ones. Even the stupid ones sense this is *not* in their best interests...

Debra Saunders is a conservative who lives in liberal San Francisco. Loved her "gutless politicians" line. They cower in fear of what the media thinks of them.

I agree with you -- but I don't know if there are a lot of 'smart ones' on the left side. They have gone berserk over the prospects of a pro-life, pro-family, woman Vice-President. As a result, their smallness and evil-heartedness has become apparent to all...

But Debra Saunders isn't a leftist -- so I can't use this article as an example as the left 'smarting up'...

Blow me away.

Fairness if SF.

Wonder is this is a sign of women protesting against the very mean blatantly in the tank MSM.

The MSM just figured out that a strike against Sarah is a strike against many, many women voters. That is one voting block that they really don’t want to tick off. They realized their mistake too late.

The problem with equating judgment with not taking any risks - the problem with demanding that leaders take no risks - is that you end up not with leaders, but with gutless politicians.

I think that defines the former Clinton administration. Chris Matthews just said he thinks the polls will be tied up again next week... and the Republican Convention just got started!

When are they going to ask about Biden’s lobbyist dynasty?

Debra Saunders is the token conservative columnist. She routinely gets ripped apart in the comments. The website does allow you to give a thumbs up or thumbs down to each comment posted without registering. So take some time to wade through the comments and give them a thumbs up or thumbs down. Currently, the conservative comments are all getting a thumbs down and the comments ripping Debra Saunders and Sarah Palin are getting Thumbs up. Time to change that?

Wow, great article by Debra J. Saunders. She had a lot of guts and insight to wright this piece. However, I think this piece and the Times being forced to retract one of its earlier hit pieces on Sarah Palin are a sign that the tide is starting to turn. By the end of tomorrow night I think that the liberal media will be back in full retreat.

Except that the cognoscenti don't know how to deal with real working-class people.

They certainly seem to be treating Westerners as something off an alien planet. That used to be cute. It's getting tiresome.

Still, Saunders has a point. Palin is one of those bitter people Obama was talking about just as if they were from another planet, clinging to our guns and our God. Speaking purely for myself, I'll pass on the sort of cultural arrogance that attempts to treat me as a bug under a microscope. I'm not, and when some media idiot pokes me in the chest with his microscope trying to classify me he's likely to get it stuck in his ear. Getting real tired of this.

Not a bad article, the comments on the other hand remind me why I hope San Fransisco falls off the map the next time “the big one” hits.

The bitter gun loving and God fearing folks stuck in small towns. Who think arugula is not good enough for them! The cognoscenti just despise them and it explains their venomous hatred of Sarah Palin.
