Indeed, it WAS entirely “rational”, as in, the end result of the age of reason, where humans are

accidents of evolution, alive for 70 yrs, and meaningless in the “bigger” scheme of the perfected Utopian society.

Sorry, evos, this IS the result of rejection of religion, and the acceptance of the reduced value of the human being.

Human nature is a mystery to most people. Even the Bible, which has a lot of good stuff in it, ignored the importance of selfishness. I do not consider people who have yet to delve into the true depths of our being to be irrational.

“I do not consider people who have yet to delve into the true depths of our being to be irrational.”

What about the people who ignore the millions socialism has killed and the whole societies socialism has corrupted and impoverished? Are they also rational?

Socialism isn't just an alternate form of government, as valid as democracy or monarchy or feudalism or even dictatorship. It is a viral meme that decimates societies with more efficiency than the worst natural disasters. Not only does it kill millions, it targets the brightest and most successful members of society, along with anyone else thought to be intelligent, the ones who create jobs, invent new processes, and create the majority of societies wealth.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience” — C.S. Lewis

Such is the curse of socialism. It is an ideology that has killed and impoverished millions more people than any other to date. Followers of socialism must be either irrational dupes or homicidal maniacs because mass murder is the only outcome rational practitioners of socialism could expect.

For Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and Kim Jong Ill, socialism is perfectly rational, but then they are homicidal megalomaniacs. What does that say about the ordinary followers of socialism? Frankly identifying them as irrational dupes who couldn't think their way out of a wet paper bag is being generous since the alternative, that they are evil murderous b@stards is the only other option.

“I can’t help but look at Russia as a dying nation. They may be making lots of money, but not lots of babies. The population, as far as I know, is still shrinking. Women know. They know how horrible an environment their little babushka would have to grow up in and it’s not worth it to a significant number of Russian women.”

A part of this is that the institution of marriage was effectively destroyed during the Soviet period. Women have no confidence that they will have help to raise their children *outside of state institutions*, and state institution have proved horribly unreliable these past two decades.
