Overlap of Sarah's Vetting &Security Clearance? (FR help needed)

Folks,

Someone in the "Freep" community probably can help with this question. As Gov. of Alaska, did Sarah Palin need a Security Clearance and how does that "Overlap" with the Vetting Process if at all?

The reason I ask is this, If she has a Clearance in regards to her role with the National Guard, doesn't that stop the improper vetting argument if the two processes overlap?

Doesn't that also nix the so many of the inexperience arguments?

I'm not positive but I think the Constitution describes the "clearances" and "vetting" needed.

Just a thought.

I don’t think clearances are relevant at the POTUS and VPOTUS level.

I am amused by all these types of posts especially on FR.
Are we to suppose that McCain is so stupid as to not know who Palin is?

My expectation is that no governor or presidential candidate actually has to pass an FBI background check, save for the courtesy of it.

Clinton was the first president to have his White House staff not pass the required FBI background checks for employees (elected people are not employees or staff), to the tune of 25%. He still kept them on through his tenure.

As for who we elect, we need to vet those people with out votes, or we get what we deserve. We could vote in an anarchist protester in any elected position, and it wouldn't matter if they failed 20X over on the background checks.

Voting is a solemn duty.

The answer is no. Elected officials do not require a clearance. In the past, governors weren’t even given classified info since that’s a federal thing - except on a strict case-by-case basis. After 9/11 governors were authorized it due to their position, just as congress-critters are.

The vetting is a straw man. It doesn’t matter. Sarah is McCain’s choice. Was Biden vetted? Did the Democrat party vet Obama before nominating him?

I can just see the mouth, Biden lipping off to some foreign dignitary and starting an international incident.

As Gov she could decide if she wanted classified briefing or not. If she did, then she’d need a clearance up to the level of the briefings delivered. Not likely she’d need over a straight Secret for any guard business.

I would think that a governor, who by the constitution is the head of the NG in his/her state, would have automatic access to their own NG information, so no security clearance could be demanded.

For national information, I imagine that would be different.

I would think the overlap between vetting for VP and security clearance for Natl Guard (or other classified DoD DOE, DOJ/FBI actions) would be fairly minimal. But I doubt if anyone who knows will say.

that’s possible, but as a member of the senate he’s authorized pretty much anything, legally.

It was reported at the time that Clinton could not have gotten a security clearance if had applied for a federal job. His overseas protest activities would have made him ineligible.

Elected officials often receive security clearances they couldn’t get as a private citizen. Take Barack “I did cocaine and hang with domestic terrorists and Marxists” Obama, for instance. Or take Alcee Hastings.

That said, a clearance for the material Palin would see as AK’s governor would basically amount to a proctological exam.

BTW, on a personal note, I highly resent the fact that Obama could never in a million years qualify to have my old Air Force job (KC-135 crew chief) much less get my security clearance (and mine was only Secret) yet he expects to lead the nation.

State of Alaska - Office of Homeland Security
Welcome to the Office of Homeland Security Website Mission Statement The mission of the Office of Homeland Security is to be the single, Statewide focal point for coordinating the State's efforts to prevent terrorist attacks, reduce Alaska's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the loss of life or damage to critical infrastructure, and recover from attacks if they occur.[snip]

As an example, the Governor's Homeland Security Task Force has merged with the federal Anti-Terrorism Task Force to form the Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council with a broad spectrum of members from Federal, State, and local agencies as well as members of business and industry.
