Sarah Palin and Motherhood September 2, 2008 on 1:35 pm | In Children, Election, Sarah Palin, Working Women Email This Post Email This Post

I am extremely disappointed in the choice of Sarah Palin as the Vice Presidential candidate of the Republican Party. I will still vote for Senator McCain, because I am very concerned about having a fundamental leftist, especially one who is a marvelous orator, as President.

......

I’m stunned - couldn’t the Republican Party find one competent female with adult children to run for Vice President with McCain? I realize his advisors probably didn’t want a “mature” woman, as the Democrats keep harping on his age. But really, what kind of role model is a woman whose fifth child was recently born with a serious issue, Down Syndrome, and then goes back to the job of Governor within days of the birth?

I am haunted by the family pictures of the Palins during political photo-ops, showing the eldest daughter, now pregnant with her own child, cuddling the family’s newborn. When Mom and Dad both work full-time (no matter how many folks get involved with the children), it becomes a somewhat chaotic situation. Certainly, if a child becomes ill and is rushed to the hospital, and you’re on the hotline with both Israel and Iran as nuclear tempers are flaring, where’s your attention going to be? Where should your attention be? Well, once you put your hand on the Bible and make that oath, your attention has to be with the government of the United States of America.

Exactly. She is just a tiresome scold.

i give Dr. Laura credit for being consistent... if she were to embrace Sara Palin on this ticket she would be a hypocrit... she would say this about any mother with snall children...

i love Sara Palin...

I like Dr. Laura, but I love Sarah Palin. This is one time (perhaps the one and only time) when Laura probably should have kept her social conservative mouth shout.

And let’s face it, doesn’t the family of a Vice President or President always make some sacrifices? When she becomes Vice-President, her husband can quit his job and stay home with the kids. She may even become President some day.

I’m a disappointed with Laura, but I understand that she is doing her thing. She emphasizes traditional family morality. It’s a good thing she does. I think the rest of us should realize that is her shtick, and ignore her in the case. No grudges, just benign neglect.

LOL. I knew Dr. Laura's opinion would be thus--how could it be otherwise, given what she's been saying for the past umpteen years?

What do you want to bet she will now become a momentary media fave again?

The fact of the matter is, there are times when commitment to country trumps even commitment to family. Like during a time of war.

I consider Sarah Palin to be an extraordinarily talented woman who has arrived on the scene at the exact right moment. For her to turn away from this moment would have been to deny her an opportunity to change history for the better.

Frankly, I wouldn't blame her or admire her any less if she had turned down the offer citing family reasons. But I'm thankful she didn't.

America needs her right now.

The older kids help take care of the younger ones. It has always been so.

There was a short period in the 90’s when I listened to the dear “Doctor” - but I got better. I'm not sure if she's even carried on a station in Upstate SC any more.

I’m shocked that even anyone still listens to her. I view her audience members as the same people who watch Dr. Phil but who go to a church that handles rattlesnakes.

Boy, I’ll bet Laura’s mother is proud of her daughter’s statement. Oh wait, that’s right...

Another sexist weighs in...men can't be loving ...don'tcha know./s And women can't let their children know love unless they are with them 24/7. When will these dividers ever go away?

Newsflash...Laura...men love, they really do.

This is the most unprofessional display I have seen in years.

Oy vey! Back in the days when I could stand listening to her, I heard Schlessinger say countless times that she approved of mom/dad tradeoffs, as long as one parent was with the kids. Now that Sarah Palin has burst on the scene, DL gets all huffy about it? Now you know why I quit tuning in to her daily ego-fest.

I expect to see a lot of "fringe conservatives" quoted by the libs in the coming weeks as they try to convince us that "our own people" don't think Gov. Palin is a good choice. They've actually already dragged out Dr. Laura. Last night Larry King had THREE pro-Obama feminists on (at the same time) to tell us how terrible Palin is for womyn, and one of them went on about "the only person I've heard say a woman with kids shouldn't be working is Dr. Laura."

Reminds me of the old Hogan's Heroes colonel: I SEE NUTHINK!

Ditto. We'll get a glimpse of who Dr. Laura really is in the coming weeks.

Now that she's made her statement, if she shuts up about it and lets McCain/Palin defeat Obama, she'll be doing the country a great service.

However, if she takes this show on the media circuit and milks it for all it's worth to help her career, she'll deserve all the scorn and derision that can be heaped upon her.

If your child becomes ill, no matter their age, a parent’s attention will be with that child.

What’s Laura’s real problem?

Sarah is a strong woman who has a supportive husband and normal, imperfect children, and I doubt she’s ever thought about calling in for Laura’s input and/or chastisement.

Unbelievable. Anything to justify your party's candidate, eh?

Not only that, she didn’t even make the short list of who John McCain would look to for advice. :)

Maybe if Dr. Laura had been a stay at home mom instead of running a talk show.

Thank you for putting into words what has bothered me with even some here who say, "Freepers are being hypocrites by supporting Palin." This woman (Sarah) agrees with every thing most conservatives believe, and she is one shining star that could save this country from a Marxist being the next president and putting a couple of judges on the Supreme Court that would ruin this country for YEARS and YEARS. But no, let's bitch and tell Sarah to step down, because she doesn't fit our cookie cutter view motherhood. Talk about conservatives (especially pro lifers like "Dr" Laura) cutting off their nose to spite their face!! Sheesh.

Palin’s nomination is flushing out the flakes....Dr. Laura, Peggy Nooner, Mike Murphy, Kay Bailey, and more that I’ve missed. Good riddance as far as I’m concerned.

Hannity was right. Conservatives/Freepers eat their own. Can't we have any disagreement in the party anymore? Dr Laura does bring up some good points.
