McCain TV Ratings Beat Obama in Preliminary Numbers
TVWeek ^ | 9/5/08 | Andrew Krukowski

Posted on 09/05/2008 8:16:50 AM PDT by B Knotts

Presidential candidate John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention drew more television viewers than his rival Barack Obama attracted at the Democratic party's event last week, according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research.

Across all broadcast networks Thursday, Sen. McCain’s speech ended the night with a 4.8 rating/7 share, compared to Sen. Obama’s 4.3/7 average, according to overnight numbers from metered households in 55 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen. These ratings are preliminary, however, and are subject to change.

NBC’s coverage of Sen. McCain’s speech started directly at the tail end of the opening game of NFL season, with the speech pulling in a 6.3 rating/10 share, topping Sen. Obama’s speech last week by 26%. That lead-in may have boosted audiences who last night turned out in droves to watch Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin introduce herself to the country.

ABC’s showing of the McCain speech averaged a 4.5/7, down 2% from the same night of the Democratic convention last week, while CBS’ coverage took in a 3.4/5, an increase of 3%.

I was so very moved by John’s climatic end. I actually had not heard this narrative in such great detail before and I found it deeply moving.

What a stark contrast from the empty-suit phony at the top of the other ticket.

Yup; Zero is basically spent at this point. There’s nothing new he can do or say that would make any difference—another reason why they can and, politically speaking probably must go harshly negative from here on out.

For instance, they just released a new radio ad here in Philadelphia (at least I had not heard it before). It’s basically an anti-pro life ad that flat out states that “McCain will make abortions illegal,” conveniently leaving out the 2-7 year process a constitutional amendment requires or the intermediary of the Supreme Court if he were to go that route.

In other words, the message is typical scare tactics directed at the Hillary contingent—don’t just ship yet, remember real feminists are single issue voters who stake everything on abortion, blah, blah, blah. Given that Philadelphia is, imho, the most liberal city in America, and the ad market here is not cheap, this is more proof of how terrified they are of Palin Power.

I couldn't agree more. The first bit of the speech accomplished its objective but the last bit... Yow! He certainly closed on a high note.

Yeah, I guess we really should factor in the “moose vote” when discussing Gov. Sarah Palin’s appeal to rural Americans! (i.e. The moose in Alaska REALLY want Sarah Palin to relocate to the lower 48 which she would largely need to do for much of the time as Vice president.)

I was wondering about that NFL game—glad it must have ended just as the speech started?

I read somewhere yesterday it was not by accident. McCain's team said they would only start after the game.

I so hope you are right.
I thought the same thing with Bush/Gore, but it was a squeaker, as you know.

People came to their TV sets last night because Sarah made them curious and what they got was the beautiful story of Cindy and John, an actual hero and the original Angelina Jolie.

I love Sarah Palin most because she makes me see why John McCain deserves to be elected.

I can’t stand that “McCain/MILF 08” design shown at the bottom of that page. Disrespectful garbage.

Forget the polls done over the weekend... they are notoriously flaky.

The first polls that will mean anything this year will arrive next Thursday/Friday.

This is the first national election in my life Nixon that I believe “corruption” may be able to be raised as a telling political issue.

McCain, by choosing Palin, has put into place a superstructure from which to raise that issue that NO other VP candidate in the country could have helped him erect. I dare them to talk about New Orleans, or lobbying, or the money in politics. With Congress’ approval ratings in the 10% range, and the Dems controlling both houses, they are in extreme jeopardy. I wonder if they even realize just how dangerous the water is for them in this respect now.

People are not happy at all with either party right now... it’s not just Bush... there’s not much respect of any of them. In addition, the way Sarah is so powerful in the attack: “says something one place and something else in another place” - sticks the knife in and twists it with a laugh and a smile... this may be the most powerful TEAM for president ever in my lifetime.

OOPS - that site has good gear. However, be sure to note that though it is linked directly from johnnccain.com, it is a “for profit store and not a donation of any type” operation.

You may be right. I’ve heard nothing but “OBAMA” since, what, last Christmas? Partly the reason I’ve avoided watching the news shows for 9 months - it was Obama this, Obama that - even sick of hearing the negative stuff about him.
