McCain TV Ratings Beat Obama in Preliminary Numbers
TVWeek ^ | 9/5/08 | Andrew Krukowski

Posted on 09/05/2008 8:16:50 AM PDT by B Knotts

Presidential candidate John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention drew more television viewers than his rival Barack Obama attracted at the Democratic party's event last week, according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research.

Across all broadcast networks Thursday, Sen. McCain’s speech ended the night with a 4.8 rating/7 share, compared to Sen. Obama’s 4.3/7 average, according to overnight numbers from metered households in 55 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen. These ratings are preliminary, however, and are subject to change.

NBC’s coverage of Sen. McCain’s speech started directly at the tail end of the opening game of NFL season, with the speech pulling in a 6.3 rating/10 share, topping Sen. Obama’s speech last week by 26%. That lead-in may have boosted audiences who last night turned out in droves to watch Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin introduce herself to the country.

ABC’s showing of the McCain speech averaged a 4.5/7, down 2% from the same night of the Democratic convention last week, while CBS’ coverage took in a 3.4/5, an increase of 3%.

The second half was boring because no one scored, but it moved the game along quickly. It was over by 10pm.

As has been said many times: Obama's support is a mile wide and a inch deep. I think this shows that statement to be true. Looks like the big MO has changed sides.

Stu Lantz, longtime analyst for the Los Angeles Lakers, has a favorite saying of his, that is similar:

"Mr. Momentum has changed jerseys."

(or should it be "Mrs. Momentum"?)

Impressive, considering the NFL game. Seems McCain is getting the ear of the middle-class white men, an important voting block. My husband, a middle aged white guy who will not miss anything that invloves a ball, actually watched McCain’s speech, and he was duely impressed. Ditto for my son and his roomates - 22 yr. old college guys, ex-football jocks.

Not suprising in the least, PALIN and the stupid attacks on her drew in interest for her, and those that watched her wanted to see what McCain had to say.

McCain did not deliver a speech for the history books, but he absolutely delivered the right speech and the right time to win this election. He moved undecideds and blue dogs last night, make no mistake about it.

He will easily be in at least the low 50s by Tuesday or Wednesday in Ras’s daily tracking poll.

Vanity Fair is doing the same thing, and they have a Cindy McCain wardrobe tally sheet to show how supposedly elitist and out of touch she is. Leaving aside the vast wealth and property holdings of the Klintoons, the Kennedys, the Heinz-Kerrys, the Edwardses, the Hollyweirdo crowd, et al. that Graydon Carter and his minions worship, isn’t it kind of stupid for Graydon and the gang to thump Cindy for her jewels and designer shoes and clothes when those same jewelers and designers pay for lots of advertising space in Vanity Fair? If Cindy is out of touch because she is rich and owns lots of nice houses, why doesn’t the same standard apply to John Edwards or John Kerry?

Libbie “logic” at its finest.

I’ve been waiting for a moonbat report that the Redskins lousy clock management at the end of the game was a plot to make sure the game ended by 10pm for McCain’s speech.

Well, I don’t know if I’d call it typical.. I’m hard pressed to remember in my lifetime the nominee in their acceptance speech attacking, let alone admitting to, the problems and corruption within his own party before.

McCain talked from his heart, straight to the american people, and it will move them.

Palin’s sealed the deal with the base, McCain sealed the deal with America.

Its going to be a very very very ugly 2 months for the rabid democrats... its pretty obvious they are fighting a lost cause at this point, and you know that’s when they get their ugliest.

I didn’t see the videos, and I have to admit I fell asleep at 9PM because I stayed up so late Wednesday after Sarah did her speech.
I got up around 3AM and turned on the PC to see people whining about McCain’s speech, and the RAT media saying it was “horrible.”
I was like, “eh whatever” and went back to bed.

I hope you are correct, but I still think this is a very close race.

This is funny considering all the hype about how many people watched the democratic convention. All the media types can attack his speech for not being theatrical. But I thin a majority of people are more concerned with substance than style. Plus McCain’s story alone will make many people support him.

Yep, the Vanity Fair $300+ thousand estimate for her opening night wardrobe is making it’s way around the blogs. Wonder why they didn’t do the same for the DNC.

The novelty of Obama’s celeb status has worn off. That’s all he had, now he’s got nothing.

Indeed. Like I keep saying - thank God we have a loooong election season. If it were short it's much easier for a celeb idiot like Obama.

The democrats chance for election depends on people forming opinions through the media’s perspective, rather than the candidates’ words.
