Palin floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee.
San Francisco Cronicle ^ | Sunday, September 7, 2008 | Willie Brown

Palin floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee.

The Democrats are in trouble. Sarah Palin has totally changed the dynamics of this campaign.

Period.

Palin's speech to the GOP National Convention on Wednesday has set it up so that the Republicans are now on offense and Democrats are on defense. And we don't do well on defense.

Suddenly, Palin and John McCain are the mavericks and Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the status quo, in a year when you don't want to be seen as defending the status quo.

From taxes to oil drilling, Democrats are now going to have to start explaining their positions.

Whenever you start having to explain things, you're on defense.

I actually went back and watched Palin's speech a second time. I didn't go to sleep until 1:30 a.m. I had to make sure I got the lines right.

Her timing was exquisite. She didn't linger with applause, but instead launched into line after line of attack, slipping the knives in with every smile and joke.

And she delivered it like she was just BS-ing on the street with the meter maid.

She didn't have to prove she was "of the people." She really is the people....(snip)

As for Palin herself, she is going to be very, very effective on the campaign trail, especially if McCain's people can figure out how to gently keep her from getting into confrontations with the press.

If she can answer questions like she handled herself at the convention, Palin will turn out to be the most interesting person in all of politics, and the press will treat her like they treated Obama when he was first discovered.

And remember, the Palin bandwagon needs to roll for only two months....(snip)

Actually only 58 days. I think they will keep her under wraps until after the debate, maybe roll her out to Sean Hannity or someone like that just before or just after the veep debate.

There is a big class element to this. Obama’s supporters tend to be upper middle class, people with Ivy League or similar credentials, who assume that Obama is one of them because he has similar educational credentials. Unfortunately for the Dems, many more people in this country have backgrounds and cultural attitudes like Sarah’s. I think that as the election goes on, she will draw more support from Reagan Democrat types who may rarely vote Republican, but feel like they can relate to and trust a hockey mom from small town America much more than a messianic elitist who grew up in Indonesia, the son of a radical, the friend of radicals.

I generally agree with his points -- except for this one: "If she can answer questions like she handled herself at the convention, Palin will turn out to be the most interesting person in all of politics, and the press will treat her like they treated Obama when he was first discovered."

Sarah severely "dissed" the East Coast liberal establishment media. she refused to show deference and fealty, refused to kiss their rings, and then poked them in the eyes (I wanted to say pissed on their shoes, but Sarah is a lady). They are REALLY angry, and they're going to be after her tooth and nail.

And Willie Brown is a man who I disagree with politically (putting it mildly), and he’s slicker and more ethically, um, agile in many ways than the other Willie ever was, but the guy is a smart old pro. When he looks at her, then turns back to the Dems and says, “Guys, you’re in real trouble”, that means a lot.

I agree with ALL those statements...they are small, but subconsciously important to voters.

At breakfast in a Manhattan diner this morning, 2 dispirited liberal women were bemoaning the fact that Sarah would not be appearing on the Sunday talk shows.

And then the funny part was that they started tearing into Obama for being such a bad candidate. They really seemed to be resigned to an Obama loss.

They looked like the typical late-50ish, look-like-a-man lesbians that support Hillary, so they were probably PUMAs.

How dare anyone use that to describe Palin. Cassius Clay was a conscientious objector as opposed to Palin who’s proud her son is serving his country.

If the McCain campaign points out that Obama will likely be greenlighting a Dem congress, it would also present choice between Palin and Nancy Pelosi - that is a favorable matchup, and the comparison will drive the woman further into deep batshi# insanity. This is also a perfect framework for the oil drilling argument.

Is it possible Brown is upset he isn’t part of Obama’s
followers?

He’ll get some attention with that piece.

Well, last week or so ago McCain got angry at the way Palin was being treated. He got all the campaign people together. And slamming fist in hand, and said "If this is the way it's going to be, this is the way it will be."

Her speach got changed fast and that's the way it's going to be from then on. McCain knows wars when he sees them, and Palin can spot idiots at 100 yards.

Don’t you just love the liberal approach to crime? Order soup in Oakland so you can hide your jewelry during a robbery. You simply can’t make this stuff up!

Willie got almost everything right except this. They will treat her negatively with the same intensity as they have treated BO positively.
