Hurricane Ike is the fifth tropical cyclone of the 2008 hurricane season to threaten U.S. Gulf Coast states.
Reports from Turks & Caicos Islands describe 80 per cent of homes damaged or destroyed. On Sunday, Hurricane Ike's position just north of Hispanola was hampering relief efforts for devastation incurred by Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Fay. The death toll in Haiti from Gustav reached 200 people.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist held a press conference Sunday morning shortly after a Hurricane Watch was issued for the Florida Keys.

Ike Approaching Cuba Landfall
Sure hope you can stay put and not get slammed:)
I think if it stays over land long enough it truly could be a non event for us,Cuba on the other hand, not pretty.
Thanks SE Mom. The info provided here is second to none and my guess is we will ride it out ok.
TANKS,NN,,,next NOAA forecast-point is still due W.,,,
The interesting part now is,will IKE go out the south coast
of Cuba(21 N) ?,,,
Maybe head farther south ?...
If Ike hits Havana dead on, it could cause hundreds of dollars in damage.
Ike is just so upsetting to me and my daughter on a number of levels. Today we went out and restocked some supplies of hurricane essentials: toilet paper, trash bags, a new PC backup battery, even extended the checkout date of a library book just in case.
Last night we sat home and moped because the Trace Adkins concert scheduled for last night at Coushatta Casino Resort has been postponed indefinitely; posts on his fan club forum message board indicate that he might not be able to reschedule until early 2009. So much for the little one’s birthday present. On the other hand, Trace Adkins is a Webster Parish, Louisiana native, and it’s indeed quite possible that he and his family have been affected by Gustav just like the rest of us. I certainly hope not, but I definitely have to agree with the other poster who said that Louisiana has been much harder hit than the media has made it seem!
I broke this into two posts...
Now we’re watching The Bahamas get pounded by Ike. We stayed at our friend’s hotel in Little Exuma last summer (a little piece of heaven called Club La Shante in Forbes Hill), and we both fell in love with the place to the point where we’ve been seriously considering relocating there. Little Exuma is the place where several James Bond movies have been filmed on location, not to mention “Pirates of the Caribbean 2.” The Bahamian government has recently poured about $3 billion dollars into the development of the Exumas. George Town (GGT) is full of American real estate developers building McMansions and townhouses like the February Point development.
The reason I’m telling you this in so much detail is because the investors who are being actively courted to buy real estate in the Exumas are from — drumroll — Houston. The developers fly prospective purchasers into GGT and put them up at the Four Seasons before starting their big sales pitch.
So consider Ike’s double impact here. If Ike batters the Exumas and *then* barrels toward Houston, these folks probably aren’t going to have their second home to evacuate to because it’s already been in the path of the same storm. That’s really a cruel irony.
Meanwhile, we’ve got our “hunker bunker” all set to go for next weekend. We had longstanding plans to go to a special event at Queen Wilhelmina State Park in Mena, Arkansas next Saturday, but if the roads are going to be bumper-to-bumper with evacuees, we’ll have to miss it.
Can’t win for losing around here, grrr...
I wouldn’t say far south. And it hit Galveston with 20 plus foot surge. It took all the beach property and piled it up into a moving dike that mowed down everything in it’s path. People were found on the tops of trees.
Eye over Cuba coastline now...
Goodnite all.
I'll bet the concert is re-scheduled sooner than later, and not during hurricane season.
Take care.
Hey, at least Wilhelmina is on high ground. Don’t have to worry about the surge.
Cuba’s so slim that the moisture inflow won’t be much of a problem, even if Ike runs along land the entire way.
Ike’s eye has technically made landfall but seems extremely reluctant to actually go fully onshore. Let’s see what he does after a few more frames.
Cuba will knock it down at least a couple of categories if it actually goes onshore but this sets it up for healthy strengthening in the Gulf.
May be making its land transit starting a bit west of where it appeared earlier.
What are your favorite models/links?
I’ve recently become a Navy fan.
No favorites but I have to read up on the “Euro” I keep hearing about. I don’t have the acronym in front of me at the moment.
My reservation with the Navy Tropical Cyclone site is the delay in updating the info. The track map is still showing Advisory #27, six hours old. The 11PM update is #28.
I keep hearing about the EURO too but haven’t had a chance to check it out.
