Meet Evans the Atom, who will end the world on Wednesday (Experiment:Uncover Secrets of 'Big Bang')

The man behind the world’s biggest scientific experiment, which critics claim could cause the end of the world, is a Welsh miner’s son who has admitted blowing things up as a child.

Dr Lyn Evans, who has been dubbed Evans the Atom, will this week switch on a giant particle accelerator designed to unlock the secrets of the Big Bang.

But the 63-year-old physicist revealed yesterday that his passion for science was fuelled by the relatively small bangs he had created with his chemistry set at his council house in Aberdare in the Welsh valleys.

The whole point of the experiment is to try to get closer to the theoretical unification energy — the level of energy where particles become identical and electrical energy and gravity, as well as the strong and weak force, are indistinguishable. This is beleived to be 10(24) electron volts or 10(28) (100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) degrees C.

I am sure they will be pleasant surprises. There do not appear to be slouches in the casting department.

Is it possible to do it?

Not by any mechanism we can imagine, aside from the big bang. The Large Hadron Collider particles will collide at 1.4 x 10(13) electron volts. The unification energy might be 10(24) electron volts. This is 714,285,714,300 times the LHC’s energy.

If that is this wednesday, I can’t make it, I have an appointment. However, next week would be could for a world ending, I am not booked for anything, and the plus side is, we won’t ever have to worry about Obamaosama being President! Always a silver lining in there.

Numbers beyond comprehending. Not that smart people can’t calculate it properly. But can anyone understand what it really means?

We tried this in Texas: we had some glitches so we sent avocadoes and jalapenos going one way, tomatoes and onions the other, got great guacamole but also our funding pulled.

:(

“Dr Lyn Evans, who has been dubbed Evans the Atom...”

Perhaps he lives by Ffynnon Garw now:

“For some odd reason, lost in the mists of time, there's an extraordinary shortage of last names in Wales. Almost everyone seems to be a Williams, a Jones, or an Evans. To avoid widespread confusion, Welsh people often add an occupation to a name. For example, there was Williams the Petroleum, and Williams the Death. There was Jones the Bottle, and Jones the Prize Cabbage... which described his hobby and his personality. Evans the Bacon, and Evans the End of the World...”

Then you’ve got one month to make your peace with God.

I wouldn’t bother writing a will.
