Meet Evans the Atom, who will end the world on Wednesday (Experiment:Uncover Secrets of 'Big Bang')

The man behind the world’s biggest scientific experiment, which critics claim could cause the end of the world, is a Welsh miner’s son who has admitted blowing things up as a child.

Dr Lyn Evans, who has been dubbed Evans the Atom, will this week switch on a giant particle accelerator designed to unlock the secrets of the Big Bang.

But the 63-year-old physicist revealed yesterday that his passion for science was fuelled by the relatively small bangs he had created with his chemistry set at his council house in Aberdare in the Welsh valleys.

They spent so much money on this accelerator that there is no way they can get away without claiming that they discovered the Higgs Boson. They have a vested interest in making sure that they “discover” the Higgs, either by hook or crook.

Ah yes, the evil omnipresent "they."

You're an idiot and a cynical idiot. Otherwise, you wouldn't be accusing people you don't even know of corruption.

Welshman, eh? Too bad they built it in Geneva instead of Cardiff.

If you think about it, the Big Bang is awful unlikely. Try electrocity, not gravity.

Actually, given the current state of theoretical physics, his position isn’t so idiotic. 40 years without a testable prediction and ‘string theory’ is still considered science.

"Too bad they built it in Geneva instead of Cardiff."

Yeah, that way Torchwood could fix it. ;-)

Shrug. As long as it eats France first.

“But Dr Evans, the leader of the project, who has devoted 14 years of his life to building the vast particle accelerator, is dismissive of the doom-mongers.

In fact, he is so relaxed about the project, he even wears shorts to work”.

O.K., if he is wearing shorts to work then there is nothing to worry about here people.

Four years, December, 2012, the world is supposed to end. This critic says four years we see light beams coming out of the Indian Ocean after a quasar forms in the center of the planet. Coincidence?

Captain Jack and the rest could at least provide security and the rift for power. Tosh would have probably already built a portable one in another season if she had lived. I hated to see her and Owen go.

Brit TV has no problem killing off important characters.

Prof Rossler said that as the spinning-top-like quasar devoured the world from within, the two jets emanating from it would grow and catastrophes such as earthquakes and tsunamis would occur at the points they emerged from the Earth.

‘The weather will change completely, wiping out life, and very soon the whole planet will be eaten in a magnificent scenario – if you could watch it from the moon. A Biblical Armageddon. Even cloud and fire will form, as it says in the Bible.’

Wow! Makes "greenhouse gasses" and CO2 look pretty lame.

Yeah, right... We can assume academia is exempt from human nature.

I guess one way to prove their integrity would be if they conclude that it doesn’t exist. That might be a tall order, though, since I’ve heard quotes from various of the researchers that the Higgs DOES exist—it’s a certainty, and we’ve just got to prove it. Reading about this stuff, though, you don’t get the warm and fuzzies. Their interpretation of these experiments is often very subjective. They base their conclusions on consensus. I’m not sure how scientific that really is.

Armageddon-interruptus.

My local newspaper says that the collider will be fired up Wednesday to test the magnets only. Particle streams will be shot in one direction and then the other. Actual collisions won’t occur for about a month.

So true. I've been tempted to snoop around and see who will be replacing them, but I'm going to just wait and be surprised (pleasantly, I hope.....please!).
