Obama ad: “No Maverick”(Guess who voted for the Bridge to No Where?)
September 8, 2008 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 09/08/2008 4:13:03 PM PDT by Dog

I guess Barack Obama doesn’t read Hot Air, nor listens to wisdom from our own Allahpundit. Team O got so flustered by today’s “Original Mavericks” ad that they rushed this new spot out today, apparently before doing some rudimentary fact-checking. Obama argues that the Bridge to Nowhere shows him to be the real Maverick:

It’s true that Palin didn’t start off opposing the bridge, but as Governor she made the decision to kill it. At least she moved in the right direction. Who voted for it in the first place? Not John McCain; he derided it on the Senate floor, despite it being a pet project from a Republican colleague. Two of the votes came from … Barack Obama and Joe Biden: Though Gov. Palin originally supported the earmark spending on the Ketchikan bridge (“to nowhere), she eventually killed the project, chosing to spend Federal money on other infrasturcture programs.

However, Sen. Biden and Sen. Obama voted for funding the Bridge, even when given a second chance by Sen. Tom Coburn, who proposed shifting earmark funds to Katrina relief.

Let’s take a look at that amendment, too. Coburn, a real anti-pork reformer, tried to cancel earmarks and redirect funds to Hurricane Katrina relief. It gave the Senate a second chance to stop the Bridge to Nowhere and use the funds to help victims of the storm — which Obama likes to use as an example of his leadership. And yet, the supposed “maverick” of this ad and his running mate chose to support the ridiculous $200 million Bridge to Nowhere instead.

The most laughable hypocrisy about this and AP’s earlier post is Obama’s decision to use the Ketchikan bridge to attack Palin. He supported it; he failed to change his mind on it given a second chance; Obama owns that bridge right along with Ted Stevens. Yet he blames Palin for the earmark as if she isn’t as good as a reformer as he is, because she stopped it despite Obama’s best efforts to build the boondoggle.

You can’t make this up.

Hopefully, “Captain Earmark” ($740 million in pork and counting, and with its own shady connections) will continue doing two things all the way to Election Day: keep talking about earmarks and keep attacking Palin. The more he goes after the Republican running mate, the more he equates himself with her and makes McCain look presidential.

Obama is going down. His does not want to compare his record on earmarks to that of Senator McCain and Governor Palin.

I REALLY wish that the McCain people would blanket the airwaves with an ad that shows just what was pointed out in this article. It'd make him look like the utterly idiotic fart-hole that he is.

“That is not change, come on,” Obama continued. “I mean, words VOTES mean something. You can’t just make stuff up."

Is it true that when he spoke at Penn State he called their football team the “Nitally Lions” instead of Nitanny Lions”?

Please tell me this is true.

If so, we need to get this and other examples out to as many as possible to demonstrate his colossal ignorance.

Speaking of, that MTV Awards slime who called Bush “a retard cowboy” needs to have his computer smoked with the info.

I wish the distinction would be made between accepting earmarks and voting to send earmarks. Now if I'm a governor or mayor your damn right I want earmarks. Why? because that's my constituents federal tax money. It should go back to the people in infrastructure development etc. As long as it's being spent in appropriate ways. And that's exactly Gov. Palin's approach in this case. The earmark was being sent for a specific project which had no merit other than maybe to grease the palms of contributors of the congressional representative(s) (such as construction firms). Her point was to take the money but use it in a appropriate and helpful fashion.

The discussion about earmarks is being miscasted. It has to be earmarks which actually are intrinsically helpful to the community rather than grease projects for the old boy networks.

It is bad enough that both he and Biden voted for this bridge even when republicans were trying to kill it but....

THEY DID SO EVEN WHEN THE MONEY WAS GOING TO BE USED FOR THE KATRINA RELIEF EFFORTS!!!!

“Stupid is as stupid does”, should be the new Obama campaign slogan.

This just shows you how bad off the Obama campaign is right now.

I mean is this all the response they can come up with? How weak and foolish they look.

McCain is setting Obama up on this one, mark my word. They are going to come back with another ad, detailing this information. Or they are waiting to spring it on them during the debates.

I just cannot get over how bad the Obama campaign is flailing around right now. Unbelievable.

I really think the democratic party leaders have got to be sick right now. Problem is, what can they do? If they try to dump Obama, they will get crucified by Obama’s supporters. Can they get Biden to pull out, and put Hillary on the ticket? Probably their best hope of pulling this election out right now. But I don’t think she’d even consider being Obama’s running mate now. She is waiting to run for president in 2012.

The news tonight showed Obama saying that she (Gov Palin) was for it before she was against it. Then he said get it? She was for it before she was against it.

It was kind of a sad sight. I felt kind of embarrassed for him.

Memo from Howard Dean and the DNC:

Please do not use the word “Bridge” anywhere near us. Ted Kennedy just had another heart attack and the other Kennedys drove off for safer grounds (don’t know whether they hit anything on the way).

Also, Mayor Ray Nagin had a big migraine when the word “bridge” was used, so close to the latest hurricane and flashbacks to Katrina.

Also, Nancy Pelosi doesn’t like the word “bridge” as she thinks people are making fun of her smile as in, she had bad bridgework. Not true. Her plastic surgeon will attest to that.

And, no. We cannot use the song “Burning Bridges Behind Us” or the slogan “We’ll drive off that bridge when we come to it.” Teddy, again!

Thanks, Howard “The Duck” Dean, leader of the DNC - “Do Nothing Congress”
