Sarah Palin's Alaskonomics (Michael Kinsley: One of Us Has to Be Superior, Condescending)
Time ^ | Tuesday, Sep. 09, 2008 By MICHAEL KINSLEY | Michael Kinsley

Posted on 09/09/2008 12:59:35 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Sarah Palin thinks she is a better American than you because she comes from a small town, and a superior human being because she isn't a journalist and has never lived in Washington and likes to watch her kids play hockey. Although Palin praised John McCain in her acceptance speech as a man who puts the good of his country ahead of partisan politics, McCain pretty much proved the opposite with his selection of a running mate whose main asset is her ability to reignite the culture wars. So maybe Governor Palin does represent everything that is good and fine about America, as she herself maintains. But spare us, please, any talk about how she is a tough fiscal conservative.

Palin has continued to repeat the already exposed lie that she said "No, thanks" to the famous "bridge to nowhere" (McCain's favorite example of wasteful federal spending). In fact, she said "Yes, please" until the project became a symbol and political albatross.

Back to reality. Of the 50 states, Alaska ranks No. 1 in taxes per resident and No. 1 in spending per resident. Its tax burden per resident is 2 1/2 times the national average; its spending, more than double. The trick is that Alaska's government spends money on its own citizens and taxes the rest of us to pay for it. Although Palin, like McCain, talks about liberating ourselves from dependence on foreign oil, there is no evidence that being dependent on Alaskan oil would be any more pleasant to the pocketbook.

Alaska is, in essence, an adjunct member of OPEC. It has four different taxes on oil, which produce more than 89% of the state's unrestricted revenue.

You've mischaracterized Kinsley.

He's the kid who was de-pantsed by the bigger kids at school.

Isn’t he the turkey who used to be on CNN’s point counterpoint or some other silly show.

I’ll never look at a leftist again without a combination of pity and disdain.

My parting comment to Kinsley and the rest of the MSM is: Who's bitter now?

Well, that and the fact that ALASKA is geographically the size of 1/2 of the lower 48, that does have a rather large impact on infrastructure and other spending.

This article is just nonsense, like most liberal diatribes.

Don’t forget - Obama warned us that he would be the one getting attacked by the right. And Michelle warned us against that constantly moving goalpost.

“his selection of a running mate whose main asset is her ability to reignite the culture wars.”

It needed reigniting.

I can just see Kinsley sneering and the saliva droplets hitting his screen as he pecked it out...

Considering that no one up there wants to kill us in the name of Allah, I'd say being dependent on Alaska is a fine improvement over the way things are now.

"AK has no income tax and no sales tax"

As the article says, they don't have to, they tax the oil company.

And the oil company passes it onto you, the consumer.

And that's not all.

Palin's Pipeline is another scheme to tax the oil company, who will pass it onto you the consumer.

The TransCanada website has the 25 year payout of revenues on Palin's Pipeline

Oil companies- $207 billion
Alaskazuela- $131 billion
FedGov- $52 billion
TransCanada- $17 billion

As the article says, they don't have to, they tax the oil company.

Everyone who trots out this Democrat talking point seems to forget that the oil companies in Alaska are tenants, not owners.

And owners can charge rent.

Why would Alaskans allow people to drill on their land for free?

Do condo owners in the lower 48 allow people to live in their properties without paying rent?

I thought Sarah was a gap-toothed redneck. Or she burned books. Or wanted to kill all of God’s creatures...

When in actuality, she's channeling a former governor who ended up at 1600:

Here's looking at you, Kid!"

Sarah Palin thinks she is a better American than you because she comes from a small town, and a superior human being because she isn't a journalist and has never lived in Washington and likes to watch her kids play hockey.

She never said that and doesn't think that. She was just introducing herself to the American people, and she happens to be from a small town and to have watched her kids play hockey (and to have been a journalist at one point as well).

It's best to stay away from the "they think they're better than us" rhetoric, especially when you've lived so long among Washington journalists who do think themselves better than small town Americans and hockey moms. Michael, if you write that sort of thing people are going to think you are insecure or resentful.
