THE White House race has plumbed new depths as Barack Obama accused John McCain of stooping to "lies and phony outrage" in response to the Democrat's mocking talk of "lipstick on a pig".
In a new Internet ad, the McCain campaign accused Senator Obama of a sexist "smear" against the Republican's female running mate, Sarah Palin. But Senator Obama aides flagged a YouTube video showing Senator McCain using the same phrase himself.
"You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig," Senator Obama said at a school in Norfolk, Virginia, reprising his line to attack the Republican pair's claim to be "maverick" reformers at odds with their own party.
"They seize on an innocent remark, try to take it out of context, throw up an outrageous ad, because they know that it's catnip to the news media," he said.
"I don't care what they say about me. But I love this country too much to let them take over another election with lies and phony outrage and 'Swift Boat' politics," he said, referring to an ad offensive against 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry.
The McCain campaign ad over the lipstick row came just after another hugely controversial spot that had accused Senator Obama of favoring explicit sex education for kindergarten-aged children.

Actually, I think the McCain campaign’s outrage *is* ersatz. However the outrage from ordinary Americans, esp. the PUMAs is quite genuine. Surely the McCain campaign recognizes that Obama wasn’t actually attacking Palin as a ‘pig’, but trying to be too clever by half, and as so often happens when someone tries to be too clever, falling flat.
If Obama were smart, he’d have avoided the ‘lipstick on a pig’ metaphor. It seem’s Obama isn’t smart. How much affirmative action was involved in his Harvard admission?

Obama is just sore because he got out-phony outraged.
This from the guy who stated McCain’s ad criticizing him on energy was racist. The guy who used the phrase “typical white person”, etc.
Could that be why he couldn't win primary elections against Hillary???

It’s a Democrat talking point. It’s not a coincidence that so many Democrats and their fellow Democrats in the media are repeating it.
While the reaction to the lipstick on a pig comment may be overblown, Obama’s use of the phrase was very obviously a jibe at Palin. He paused for the laugh because he knew his crowd caught the reference. The big difference between Obama’s use of this phrase and McCain’s use of the phrase is that McCain never had a political opponent who had recently made a lipstick reference to herself in a highly publicized high profile speech within the previous week.

I’m surprised no one has tied Obama’s lipstick comment to dissing the hockey moms, and by projection, soccer moms and maybe all moms.
