Sheriff Lott's New Toy

The Richland County, South Carolina Sheriff's Department (that's them above) just obtained an armored personnel carrier, complete with a belt-fed, .50-cal turreted machine gun. Sheriff Leon Lott has charmingly named the vehicle "The Peacemaker," and insists that using a caliber of ammunition that even the U.S. military is reluctant to use against human targets (it's generally reserved for use against armored vehicles) will "save lives."

My personal opinion on drugs is more of the libertarian mindset than the conservative.

I respect your opinion. I disagree with it. But at least it's an honest opinion.

But more than that... It shows very, very clearly that Libertarians are NOT conservative. They don't share the same moral, social and religous values as conservatives (such as FReepers) and for the life of me.... I don't know why they're tolerated here on Free Republic.

Addiction and personal gratification can take on many different forms. Anywhere from that new set of clothing that you don’t need to that over priced home. I feel that if we make drugs illegal then all drugs should be baned from alcohol to tobacco. but that ain’t going to happen.

The only upside I can see to this is that the unorganized militia, at such time as it may need such equipment, and assuming that the government doesn’t wish it to have such equipment, it will be much easier to obtain from this law enforcement agency than having to take it from the standing armed forces.

I used to live there (Richland County encompasses about 60% of the metropolitan Columbia area, including the city of Columbia proper). Ol’ Leon loves him some expensive toys. Several years back, while all the departments around him were dealing with creaky cars and obsolete equipment, Lott bought the RCSD ten brand-new pursuit Camaros...y’know, for that one or two high speed chases PER YEAR that they might get there.

Crime and drugs are an issue in many of the areas that the RCSD covers (the city of Columbia has its own PD, of course, and last I heard they were APC-free). But in 7 1/2 years of living there, I never heard ANYTHING that would’ve required an M113 with a Ma Deuce on top. This is just more Leon Lott grandstanding, and looking for more expensive toys that he can slap an RCSD black-with-silver-lettering paintjob on.
