DUBAI, Sept 12, 2008 (AFP) - A senior Saudi cleric has issued a religious decree saying the owners of television networks broacasting "depravation and debauchery" may be killed, Al-Arabiya television reported on Friday.
"The owners of these channels propagate depravation and debauchery," said Saleh al-Luhaidan, chief justice of the supreme judicial council, the highest judicial authority in the ultra-conservative Saudi kingdom.
He made the remarks on radio in response to a caller who asked him to give an opinion on what he said were "immoral" programmes on Arab television during the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, a source at Al-Arabiya said.
"It is lawful to kill ... the apostles of depravation... if their evil cannot be easily removed through simple sanctions," Luhaidan said, according to excerpt of the remarks broadcast on the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya.
The situation is "serious ... the degradation of morals is a form of perversion on earth," he added.
During Ramadan, when Muslims must fast from dawn to dusk, Arab satellite televisions broadcast lavish productions, including soap operas and mini-series, some with historical and religious themes, as well as game shows.
A popular soap that was broadcast by Al-Arabiya for several weeks preceeding Ramadan already stirred passions in Saudi Arabia, where the grand mufti branded it "subversive" and "anti-Islamic."
Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh, head of Saudi Arabia's highest religious authority, earlier this year issued a fatwa against "Noor" and decreed that any channel broadcasting the series is "an enemy of God and his Prophet."
The Turkish-made soap opera dubbed into Arabic tells the story of Mohannad and his equally stunning wife Noor as they wrestle to reconcile the conflicting pressures of traditional and modern worlds.
Al-Arabiya is a news channel based in Dubai and part of the Saudi group MBC.

Hear, hear. I think back of how what passes as entertainment today compared to the good messages broadcast in the 50s and 60s, and it is no wonder that so many foreign nations have such a negative view of the degenerates running hollywood—fortunately, here is one that realizes every person in America does not subscribe to the filth that emanates from the peddlers of perversion.

(Just kidding. I don’t think TV moguls who broadcast filth ought to be actually executed. Just sent to a labor and reeducation camp run by the Chinese or North Vietnamese. Or by Joe Arpaio, my personal hero.)

Maybe some, just some have their negative view because they have to fight this ultra conservative fanaticism tooth and nail every day to bring change from within, yet you sponsor and allign yourselves with the filthy monarchies (saudi, etc) and dictatorships (egypt, etc) that are built upon and foster the same.
First understand and then never forget.

No more than the rest of us. The cleric is responding to what looks like a fairly mild show broadcast within the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is about a struggle between modernism and muslim religious tradition. To me it seems to suggest a challenge to this clerics totalitarian worldview. What goes on out here would be lumped together with the entire infidel world and he would like us all dead or converted.
Yah I can see their point fer sure.
Still their bad far out weighs the occasional valid point they make from time to time.

It’s ironic that liberals love Muslims so much - when Muslims are the ultimate conservatives. I guess “ultimate victim” trumps “ultimate conservative”(?)
I decree that Senior Saudi Clerics can be killed.
Oh, come on. These Saudi freaks have no moral standing to be making any judgements. Their idea of “morality” includes:
- Hijacking planes and flying them into buildings, killing thousands of innocent human beings (15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi)
- Letting girls burn to death in a school because they’re not allowed to run outside with their ankles showing
- “Honor” killing their daughters if they dare to marry a non-Muslim or get out of an arranged marriage
- Beheading “dangerous infidels”
- Cutting off the hands of those who commit minor offenses
- The 9/11 hijackers whining about our “decadence”, then going to strip clubs
- Religious police beating anyone who doesn’t conform to Sharia law
Really moral, all right. But I’m a Western girl and I show my belly button. That’s much worse. (massive sarcasm)
Far from aligned, but one sometimes realizes there is an enemy within. No people are all bad as you judge them to be.
IMHO, those who promote utter depravity and cultural despair and suicide are deserving of the death penalty in a moral sense.
I am fully aware that our present laws do not allow such, and I would oppose any change in those laws, as I believe the peddling of filth and depravity is one of the prices we pay for a free society. It is an acceptable price. (Gagging)
But that does not change my personal private opinion that those who intentionally produce and inject such poison into our culture are traitors deserving of death. I believe they will eventually pay the price for their acts if they do not repent, but I’m perfectly content to allow God to handle it in the next world.
The aforementioned media moguls won’t care. They’re far too busy hating and fearing Christians.
