Pakistan Raid Start Of Concerted Bid To Hit Al-Qaida
NPR ^ | 9/13/08 | Tom Gjelten and Tom Bowman

NPR has learned that the raid by helicopter-borne U.S. Special Operations forces in Pakistan last week was not an isolated incident but part of a three-phase plan, approved by President Bush, to strike at Osama bin Laden and top al-Qaida leadership.

The plan calls for a much more aggressive military campaign, said one source, familiar with the presidential order, which gives the green light for the military to take part in the operations. The plan represents an 11th-hour effort to hammer al-Qaida until the Bush administration leaves office, two government officials told NPR.

"Definitely, the gloves have come off," said a source who has been briefed on the plan. "This was only Phase 1 of three phases."

Good. Let’s take out as many terrorists while we can.

After Bush get out it is going to go one of two ways depending on the game. Obama the surrender monkey will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory or McCain will continue the Bush doctrine of destroying the terrorists where ever they hide. we will get to decide in November.

*** lawmakers on Capitol Hill were briefed on the new plan shortly before The New York Times broke the story this week about the Special Operations raid from Afghanistan into Pakistan. ***

Is this TREASON or what!

He's playing it safe... just in case things don't go the right way in November. I would too if it were up to me. Besides, these raids will probably cause a cashflow problem with Obama's campaign financing :-)

Obama the surrender monkey will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

I think Obama’s foreign policy could lead to atleast a nuclear explosion or worse sooner rather than later. If we were to retreat I think nuclear Pakistan will be much more vulnerable to fall into the enemy’s hands. This enemy lives for death and destruction.

At the end of the article the author questions why this is occurring now as opposed to one year ago. I'd say from references in the article to Pakistani resistance to U.S. lead attacks on their sovereign territory that was pretty obvious. This is attack by executive order, notice the congress wasn't even informed until the attacks took place; Likely without any knowledge or acceptance of the Pakistani authority. Open and closed case of years of diplomatic attempts to get the Pakistani gov. on board finally drawing to a close on the conclusion that they didn't ever really want the terrorists gone in the first place.

It is about time. This should have happened in 2001.

Pakistan wasn’t doing much to get rid of terrorists while Musharraf headed things up. Now he’s out, Pakistan has shut off the supply route for NATO, and is openly defying America and the allies.
Glad to see President Bush say, “Screw ‘em. We’ll take care of business ourselves,” at last. Praying Bin Laden and Zawahiri are taken out before the year’s end.

I'd love to see a roster of exactly who was briefed.

Should have been doing this since 2002, rather than trying to play footsie with Musharraf and the Pakistanis.

Keeping Al Queda on the defensive in Pakistan also helps keep them from influencing the transition of Pakistan’s leadership, now that Masharraf has stepped down.

OK, I know I’m going to catch hell for this. Obama is clearly not ready to be president, but I will never trust McCain to do any of the things he is promising today, although I will probably end up voting for him. Anyways, to get back to my original point - can someone please point out how this is any different from what Obama said he was going to do? I seem to remember McCain and Clinton jumping on his back about striking into Pakistani territory. Thanks

It is a covert action, and should never have been part of the public debate.
