Decision Voids Absentee Ballot Apps in Ohio:
It is interesting to juxtapose Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner's decision to allow some absentee voters to register and vote on the same day with another recent decision that has the effect of invalidating over 1,000 absentee ballot applications collected by the McCain campaign.
More than 1,000 absentee ballot applications in Greater Cincinnati have been ruled invalid because Republican Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign printed a version of the form with an extra, unneeded box on it.
The forms were sent to more than 1 million registered voters statewide, according to a McCain spokesman in Ohio.
The McCain forms included a box voters can mark to declare themselves qualified to vote. But Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner says that if the box isn't checked, circled or initialed, the application is no good. Those voters are essentially admitting they're not eligible, she said.
That ruling has drawn howls from Republicans, who say it's an attempt to disenfranchise them. Election officials say it could wreak havoc in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 4 election.
"I have not seen a ruling that indirectly impacts voters to the enormity of this since I've been here," Hamilton County Board of Elections Deputy Director John Williams said of his nearly five-year tenure at the board.
This decision could well end up in court, in part because similar absentee ballot applications collected before a special election in 2007 were accepted.
I’m confused...the CANDIDATES print and mail the absentee ballots?!
And so the annual democrat voter fraud campaign begins, right on time.
Well I certainly hope that RNC attorneys are right on top of this thing and file a court challenge TOMMORROW!
And so we commence.
“Im confused...the CANDIDATES print and mail the absentee ballots?!”
I was at an election law site, and I understood it to say that in Ohio the funding was made available for absentee ballot applications; however, it was not required to send out said applications, at least for certain counties. I suspect the McCain campaign recognized this and made sure all registered Republicans received their application for absentee ballot. However, there was a mistake in printing.
The GOP has, as I understand it, sued within the last few days.
They never stop.
We went through this in 2004. Same old crap. The ‘RATS will do anything to throw out ballots for the good guys. No challenge to ACORN “voter registrations” though.
My bad...I didn't read closely enough.
Given the fact that vote fraud/anti-Republican official sentiment runs so rampant I am amazed the McCain camp made such a basic mistake.
Buses in surrounding states have already been hired and the qualifying documentation is at the printers.
TAeh Liberals take the cake in diry pool! Where are the Conservatives in Ohio, or are there any conservative in Ohio with backbone?
Why should a Secretary of State have that much power?
Actually, the article states they added an extra box. By not making an exact copy of the original, they made a mistake. Material? Probably not. But a mistake need not be material if a political hack is looking for an excuse.
McCain’s people have got to be more careful. They have got to expect to have everything they do gone over with a fine toothed comb for any excuse to disqualify it.
whoops, search didn’t find it, so I posted it later:

I would have this miscarriage of justice on every TV screen several times a day saying to the voters “DO NOT LET THE DEMONCRAT SECRETARY OF STATE TAKE WAY YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE”
BTW; This is the same kinds of intimidation that Obama is known for pulling against other candidates in Chicago elections.
“Doesn’t the state print up the ‘approved’ absentee ballot? Why couldn’t the local GOP leaders get those and send them out...or is that considered a no-no? I’m just not understanding how or why it’s even lawful to print up your own absentee ballot and send it out.”
The distinction is that it was the application for the absentee ballot, not the ballot itself. The state does not automatically send out the application to vote absentee to every voter.
its another “lets count ballots one way when it benefits us and another when it doesn’t”...Florida redux
