Interesting comments regarding the public health threat from illegal aliens. Too often, if at all, this part of the debate is ignored or not represented well.

On a related note, today, early, I came to the office and found my trash can empty and with a new plastic liner. In my trash bag was (yuck) spit with blood in it. The night cleaning crew are "supposed" to be American citizens, but oddly enough, they don't really speak English. Anyway, I contacted the building manager and the liner was removed and treated as possible bio hazard. He ordered the cleaning company to have their employees undergo medical testing. We shall see what happens.

(BTW, northern VA area near Wash DC. . . illegal alien central.)

Legally, of course, and to screen for public health hazards. . .rightfully so, as were my great-grand parents (on both sides).

Illegals don’t care about public health.

We just moved to Phoenix last year - and we have LOADS of illegals. My kids have been catching everything going at school. You can bet I keep all their vaccines up to date - esp. the whooping cough - thank heaven they’re teenagers so I don’t have to worry about things like sharing drinks or anything......

Actually, I think we do, but no longer at the point of entry.

Obtaining immigration status means proof of immunizations at point of departure.

You are supposed to provide this proof to the US Embassy before you depart for your new homeland.

President Bush signed legislation last week (August, 2008) repealing a rule that prevented HIV-infected immigrants, students and tourists from receiving U.S. visas without special waivers. The ban also held up U.S. adoptions of children with HIV. Seven nations still have an outright ban on entry for HIV-infected people, and more than 65 impose some travel restrictions on the estimated 33 million people worldwide living with the virus....Developed countries say the travel restrictions keep them from having to absorb the costs of caring for HIV-positive people from poorer nations. I'm wondering how that works. I'm guessing it means they can't be treated effectively at taxpayer expense if they aren't here living on welfare.

And aren’t able to live on welfare in the other, wiser countries who still bar them. To me this is another instance of OUR government putting the interests of foreigners ahead of the interests of those it is supposed represent and defend - U.S. citizens.

We do screen legal immigrants. I sponsored my ex-husband (he was then my husband) for a green card and he had to be screened (like other immigrant visa applicants) for HIV, tuberculosis, etc. He also had to prove his vaccinations were up to date or have them re-done. He was also subjected to a psychological examination.

Visas are routinely denied on medical grounds. There are entire web forums devoted to griping about the legal immigration process.

Been there, done that. Ask me anything. If I know the answer I’ll share it. I’ve also been a (legal) immigrant myself so I know the process in the UK too.

The risk to public health posed by illegal immigrants is constantly ignored and glossed over while healthcare workers in major illegal centers are seeing a big rise in tuberculosis cases. It’s so annoying.
