Posted on 09/17/2008 4:10:11 AM PDT by IrishMike
IN Monday's Post, I discussed how Barack Obama, during his July trip, had asked Iraqi leaders not to finalize an agreement vital to the future of US forces in Iraq - and how the effect of such a delay would be to postpone the departure of the US from Iraq beyond the time Obama himself calls for.
The Obama campaign has objected. While its statement says my article was "filled with distortions," the rebuttal actually centers on a technical point: the differences between two Iraqi-US accords under negotiation - the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA, to set rules governing US military personnel in Iraq) and the Strategic Framework Agreement (SFA, to settle the legal basis for the US military presence in Iraq in the months and years ahead).
The Obama camp says I confused the two. It continues: "On the Status of Forces Agreement, Sen. Obama has always said he hoped that the US and Iraq would complete it - but if they did not, the option of extending the UN mandate should be considered.
"As to the Strategic Framework Agreement, Sen. Obama has consistently said that any security arrangements that outlast this administration should have the backing of the US Congress - especially given the fact that the Iraqi parliament will have the opportunity to vote on it."
If there is any confusion, it's in Obama's position - for the two agreements are interlinked: You can't have any US military presence under one agreement without having settled the other accord.

I really like that Taheri guy.
Thanks for the great post!
From the article:
In a long interview with the pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat, Zebari says: “Obama asked me why, in view of the closeness of a change of administration, we were hurrying the signing of this special agreement, and why we did not wait until the coming of the new administation next year and agree on some issues and matters.”
Obama is an unabashed liar.
Actually, I was wondering if Obama’s trip overseas was for just this sort of reason, to undermine and make Geo. W. look bad.
Now this is a HUGE scandal, and yet all the media cares about is the non-scandal of Palin’s troopergate.
When Obama call you a liar, it usually means you nailed the truth.
Nice new pic below of Obamassiah. When I first saw it, I didn't think it looked like him very much.
But as I tilted my head to my right shoulder while still looking at the pic.....IT'S HIM!!
I am waiting for someone, obviously it won’t be Bill O’Reilly....to ask Biden...about his long held idea that Iraq should be carved up into three separate countries....
bingo - BTTTT
Like the article says, the sob wants to take credit for the Iraq war. He now admits that the surge and everything else has worked.
[Obama] said he told Zebari that negotiations for a Status of Forces agreement or strategic framework agreement between the two countries should be done in the open and with Congress's authorization and that it was important that that there be strong bipartisan support for any agreement so that it can be sustained through a future administration. He argued it would make sense to hold off on such negotiations until the next administration.
"My concern is that the Bush administration--in a weakened state politically--ends up trying to rush an agreement that in some ways might be binding to the next administration, whether it was my administration or Sen. McCain's administration," Obama said. "The foreign minister agreed that the next administration should not be bound by an agreement that's currently made."
In other words,Obama was trying to derail current US policy, while Zebari was urging him not to "waste time."
Just felt the need to yell that part "from the highest mountain"!!
Let’s talk about that tanning bed!
“Like the article says, the sob wants to take credit for the Iraq war. He now admits that the surge and everything else has worked.”
The only thing I remember from his greek temple speech was trying to take credit for success in Iraq.
Can you believe it?
Actually claiming he was right and McCain was wrong?
The troops will come home because of OBAMA??
It’s like he lives in some parallel mirror image universe.
Zero has violated the Logan act. When will this be openly discussed?
” Here is how NBC reported Obama’s position on June 16, after his conversation in the US with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari: “Obama also told Zebari, he said, that Congress should be involved in any negotiations regarding a Status of Forces Agreement with Iraq. He suggested it may be better to wait until the next administration to negotiate such an agreement.”
In other words, Obama wanted a delay on the Status of Forces Agreement, not on the Strategic Framework Agreement - as his rebuttal now claims.”
The money quote.
Note the last paragraph of the story for an insight/lesson on how the 0bots debate international relations:
“While I am encouraged by the senator’s evolution, I must also appeal to him to issue a “cease and desist” plea to the battalions of his sympathizers - who have been threatening me with death and worse in the days since my article appeared.”
That changes everything. It moves it beyond a charge that Teheri was making stuff up in yesterday’s column, and confirms the Zebari statements.
0 is in trouble. This is a huge game changer that could break the Nov 4 elections wide open for McCain-Palin.
Wait, I’m assuming the alphabets will actually report it.
The last sentence is a little unsettling:
——While I am encouraged by the senator’s evolution, I must also appeal to him to issue a “cease and desist” plea to the battalions of his sympathizers - who have been threatening me with death and worse in the days since my article appeared.——
It isn’t surprising though is it?
He talks a good game - a “new” kind of politics.
But what that really meant was bringing Chicago-style thuggery onto the national level.
Did anyone charge Obama’s stage at his convention?
No - of course not.
Look at all the freaks who have traveled to Alaska.
These people are whacked and need to be stopped.
Very impressive work! Too bad we’re talking about a Democrat, because this would be deep macaca if he were a Republican.
“And he makes no mention of his running mate Joe Biden’s pet project for carving Iraq into three separate states,” writes Taheri.
If only Sarah Palin had made that suggestion, it would be on everyone’s lips — as damning evidence of incompetence! But, it’s only the brilliant foreign policy expert Joe Biden.
Taheri sews it up well by noting the death threats he gets from Obama supporters.
War Zones on the Itinerary
New York Times, The (NY) - June 17, 2008
Author: JEFF ZELENY
Its not just battleground states on the itinerary for the presidential candidates. Senator Barack Obama said Monday that he also intended to visit Iraq and Afghanistan before the November election.
One day after Senator John McCain met with Iraqs foreign minister, Hoshyar Zebari , Mr. Obama spoke to Mr. Zebari by telephone. Mr. Obama said he was encouraged by reductions in violence in Iraq, but added that the United States should withdraw troops at a pace of one to two brigades a month, with a goal of removing most combat troops in 16 months.
We have no interest in permanent bases in Iraq, Mr. Obama said.
Among the issues being discussed between Mr. Zebari and the presidential candidates is a long-term security accord between Iraq and the United States. While the Bush administration would like to see an agreement reached by midsummer, Mr. Obama said he opposed such a swift timetable.
My concern is that the Bush administration, in a weakened state politically, ends up trying to rush an agreement that in some ways might be binding to the next administration, Mr. Obama said, whether its my administration or Senator McCains administration.
Mr. Obama , who has not been to Iraq for more than two years, said last month that he would like to visit. After speaking to Mr. Zebari , he sounded more definitive, saying, I told him that I look forward to seeing him in Baghdad.
Mr. McCain has invited Mr. Obama to take a joint trip to Iraq, a gesture that Mr. Obama dismissed as a political stunt. Alex Conant, a Republican Party spokesman, said it had been nearly 900 days since Mr. Obama visited, in January 2006.
Mr. Obama did not say Monday when he would be going, but said it would be before the election.
Obama aide signals shift on Iraq policy
Washington Times, The (DC) - July 8, 2008
Author: Donald Lambro, THE WASHINGTON TIMES
In a lengthy telephone call last month with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari , Mr. Obama appeared to send a signal that his plan was far less rigid than he earlier suggested. Mr. Zebari said the presumptive Democratic nominee reassured him that he would do nothing to jeopardize Iraqs security gains. He will not take any drastic decisions, or reckless actions, he said.
I thought you were nuts but I tilted my head and lo, I SAW HIM!
After reading this guy’s updated posting, I sent a “heads up” note to Drudge. Other FReepers may want to do the same - including a link to the article http://www.nypost.com/seven/09172008/postopinion/opedcolumnists/obama_objects_129453.htm?page=0
One almost has to believe that the Obama campaign doesn’t realize that Google and Lexis/Nexis exist for folks to readily find old quotes, old articles, etc.
(e) all of the above
at the Obama Spin-Center?
“What we meant for the Senator to say is ...”
HA, the product of Obama and his team of 300 foreign policy advisors is a tissue of lies and an incoherent pretence at a policy on Iraq.
Taheri’s claims seem to be well substantiated and Team Obama’s furious assault on this writer has simply exposed Obama to further points of criticism. They have made incorrect and incoherent assertions about what Obama has been up to and what he thinks the way forward in Iraq should be.
Biden was supposed to help the ticket on foreign policy, but of course Biden is the one on record (1) voting for the war authorization, and (2) publicly supporting the dismemberment of Iraq into several pieces. It will be great to see Obama’s and Biden’s positions on Iraq, closely compared by an assertive and inquisitive media, right (oh, wait, I’m not sure that exists in relation to the Democrats).
Maybe they are just too out of touch and unable to use a computer!
will read later
I’m waiting on that.
Can’t expect the MSM to mention it.
Then again, can’t expect Charlie Gibson to be as familiar with the Logan Act as he is with the Bush Doctrine.
I think possibly so.
I love that illusion! It’s one of my favorites.
And we now know the source of the Zebari quote about what Obama said - it was an Arab newspaper!
“In a long interview with the pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat, Zebari says: “Obama asked me why, in view of the closeness of a change of administration, we were hurrying the signing of this special agreement, and why we did not wait until the coming of the new administation next year and agree on some issues and matters.”
It is crystal clear Obama was trying to make foreign policy decisions without involving the president. This is a BOMBSHELL. How do we get this story from the NY Post to the NY Times, WAPO, etc?
To get what they want, isn’t it OK for Muslims to lie?
I don’t see BO at all. Looks like Malcolm X.
Funny after all that Bush lied carp, that Obama is not even in office and he starts off by lying.
That part about Obama saying one thing in Scranton and another in San Francisco is now confirmed by Obama telling the Americans one things and the Arabs another.
Just like the Jihadi, one thing in english and another in Arabic. Obviously Barack did not sleep through all his Muslim classes in Indonesia.
They are not treating us as retard, they know most people can find thier lies on the internet. But they know their base well...
Could someone please explain to me if this entry is correct? Dr. George Logan, a prominent REPUBLICAN (in 1799?). I thought the GOP was founded in 1850.
Congress established the Logan Act in 1799, less than one year after passage of the ALIEN AND SEDITION ACTS, which authorized the arrest and deportation of ALIENS and prohibited written communication defamatory to the U.S. government. The 1799 act was named after Dr. George Logan. A prominent Republican and Quaker from Pennsylvania, Logan did not draft or introduce the legislation that bears his name, but was involved in the political climate that precipitated it.
You’re still on Troopergate? Haven’t you heard the latest scandal the 30 investigators have dug up? She was stealing pencils! These weren’t just any pencils, either. They were the mechanical kind. Yeah! Right out of the Governor’s office! Like, purse-fuls. It was weird, cuz like Accounting noticed it first. It was like, “Hey, there’s no pencils in the supply room. What’s up with that”? And, luckily there were like all these investigators, right?, from like the lower 48, and they got on it right away. Yeah. Found empty mechanical pencil boxes in her wastebaskets and stuff. They took the opportunity to do a thorough search of her office since she’s away doing that Vice Presidential tour thing right now. You haven’t heard anything yet, gurl. These guys are good. They got like pix and everything. Of the empty boxes in her wastebasket. In HER office! Really cool. Obama! Hell Yeah!
first tanning beds and NOW PENCILS you say?
I am SO DONE with Palin!
A person can only take so much!
