The White House slammed an energy bill that the House of Representatives passed Tuesday night, calling it a waste of time.
The administration accused House Democrats of lacing the bill with "poison pills" that demonstrate a "lack of seriousness about expanding access to the vast domestic energy resources" off U.S. coasts.
President Bush and Democrats have been tangling for months over drilling offshore in an area known as the outer continental shelf, which had been placed off-limits both by Congress and executive order for decades. Bush lifted the executive order this summer as oil prices shot up and gas prices reached record levels at the pump

Bush should veto ANY bill that contains an extension of the offshore drilling ban. I don’t care if they attach it to appropriations, President Bush should veto it.
If the ban expires, no legislation is necessary.
If current ban expires we can drill anywhere in our coastal waters right? Or are there other road blocks that prevent us from drilling.
Something about the oil companies can drill but like fifty miles offshore where there is no oil????
It was a quick one, the dems cutely inserted a no-revenue-sharing provision to discourage states from developing them, and kept a whole load of enviromentalist whacko friendly provisions allowing easy court injuctions.
... Who cares about the legislation...the local Court of Appeals will be the deal killer.... these Federal judges are mostly activist slime balls.
Go GW veto the bill and send Dick Cheney to take Pelosi and the other Opecker Thug supporters quail hunting.

There are still state bans, but they don't cover an area as far out as the federal bans. Even thouse, however, are starting to lose favor.
“she allows the ban to expire her wacko eco-twit constituents will have her tossed.”
They camped out by her Gay Frisco Condo earlier this year during some catfight between her and the greenies and anti war/America misfits.
bttt
Excellent! I wish the White House had stood up and b-slapped the scumbags like this a lot more often over the years.
I Don't agree. Cheney should just tag along with his shotgun as backup.
Sarah Palin should take Pelosi on a big game hunting weekend. She doesn't use a shotgun and knows where to hit the big animals. In order to have a lot of some good meat.
Pelosi will decline because she's just not digestible.
I’m not in that industry but I imagine that a lot more is needed than simply an expiration of the ban. Positive legislation signed into law with policies and guidelines for regulatory agencies seem essential. Think about it this way..... if you are a group of oil or natural gas executives deciding whether to invest hundreds of millions of dollars, maybe into the billions of dollars, would you commit enormous resources simply b/c the ban has expired, when at any time various federal agencies could throw up roadblocks, Congress might suddenly pass a new law, etc.
Maybe FReepers with real knowledge :^) can chime in, but I cannot see how any rational investors could commit the huge sums and resources involved in the face of so much uncertainty. There’s enough risk due to dry holes, mother nature, etc. but the cloud of political and regulatory uncertainty adds greatly to the financial risks....
This is why all the Demagogues and RINOs who continue to strangle our domestic oil and gas exploration/production/refining are economic idiots!!! They make it very unlikely that any rational investors would put a lot more into domestic oil & gas in offshore locations even if the federal “ban” expires.... for how long?
How about delaying it in the Senate long enough that President Bush won't have to act upon it before the existing ban expires. Then President Bush can announce a ceremony at 12:00am on the day of expiration and announce that he's going to open up new drilling. At the ceremony, he can "sign" the bill VETO.
Sounds good to me! I believe there are parliamentary maneuvers even a minority party can use to hold up the entire body, requiring 60 votes to get around them. I think all we need is til the end of this month. Time to shut the place down for awhile!
