Drivers could have speed limited by satellite devices[UK]

Drivers could have their speed controlled by satellite to stop them from breaking the limit following a Government trial of new technology.

Cars fitted with the system would have their speed automatically monitored by satellites, which would also be programmed with the speed limits for different roads.

A motorist who tried to accelerate beyond the speed limit would find the system stopping the car from going any faster or issuing a warning instructing them to slow down.

The Department for Transport is set to back the system known as Intelligent Speed Adaptation. It follows lengthy trials conducted in Leeds in where cars have been fitted with the sophisticated satellite navigation system.

The Department for Transport said that the installation of the technology would be voluntary, but it is already in talks with the motor industry over how it could be made available for those who wanted to buy it.

Three types of the technology could be made available.

The Department for Transport says the installation of the Intelligent Speed Adaptation system would be voluntary

Just wait until you need to pull out and pass somebody! Oh? No passing allowed?

Why not simply implant “The Instrument of Discipline” directly in their heads?

Why don’t they simply dispense with all of the niceties and simply require that everyone report to the local PD for implantation of mind-control chips? It’d save a lot of time, effort and money - and whoever didn’t have one after a date certain could be shot on site so as to further ease all of society’s ills.

I was typing as you posted. Great minds think alike...at least until the chips are implanted. :>)

Socialists believe that the people need protecting from themselves. May God forbid that this country ever goes down that road. Big Brother is kin to Obama.

This will be used in the US. I noticed my Garmin can display my current speed. But, the localities won’t be able to give up the revenue, so here’s how this will be done in Amerika:

Cars will be fitted with satellite tracking. When you speed, the location, and time, and rate of speed will be recorded and sent to the locality where you were speeding. Your ticket will arrive in the mail.

This will happen.

What if there is an emergency of some sort that requires the driver to speed ?

...and thus the natural progression of banning guns.

At least the British are unleashing velvet glove totalitarianism, instead of just the old school killing fields.

Sorry, but America’s future is socialist. The people have the power to vote themselves entitlements, so they will. With entitlements comes socialism. It’s the nature of things.

I expect the company that makes the devices to be sued out of business the first time the device causes an accident. Given the number of cars of the road, it won't take long. I can envision a simple case where a car has to speed up to clear the way for an emergency vehicle and is thwarted by the device. The lawyers are probably salivating as the prospects.

Fuses can be pulled, wires can be cut, and antennas can be disabled.

One fuse disabled the OnStar crap in my car. They actually had the audacity to barge into my vehicle (muted the radio and interrupted my conversation with my wife) to make an advertising announcement because I was not subscribing to their service. I found the fuse and killed them permanently.

Much better for you to die than to exceed an arbitrary speed limit by even 5 MPH.

Surveillance cameras everywhere, neighbors encouraged to report on each other for environmental violations, police who arrest home-owners who try to protect themselves from criminals, fees to enter city areas, Islamic Shari’a courts established, and now direct governmental control of private vehicles. What a terrible place Britain has become.

"What if there is an emergency of some sort that requires the driver to speed ? "

Under most circumstances, there is absolutely no need to proceed at a rate which exceeds the limit.

If for some reason you think that you are the exception to the rule, please submit form 231B in Quadruplicate and the speed monitors will consider your request.

Not for very much longer. I don’t know exactly what the time frame is but I believe the last generation of people that drive has been born. Machines did the Urban Challenge and drove in a simulated urban environment successful last year.

Skynet lives!
