Easily Startled People May Be More Politically Conservative

Fierce individualists, Americans figure that we choose our own political beliefs — but actually it could come down to biology.

Individuals who are more easily startled by threats are more likely than others to support protective policies, such as military spending, the Iraq War and the death penalty, finds a new study.

...

The researchers measured levels of skin moisture as indicators of stress and anxiety for each participant as he or she looked at threatening images, including a large spider on the face of a frightened person, a dazed individual with a bloody face and an open wound with maggots in it.

Similarly, participants also viewed three non-threatening images (a bunny, a bowl of fruit and a happy child) placed within a series of other images.

The researchers also measured the intensity of the participants' eye blinks in response to sudden, jarring noises.

Harder blinks are linked with a heightened state of fear, the researchers say.

Participants who scored high on the skin and blinking stress tests also tended to support military spending, warrantless searches, death penalty, the Patriot Act, obedience, patriotism, the Iraq War, school prayer and the concept of Biblical truth.

They tended to oppose pacifism, immigration, gun control, foreign aid, compromise, premarital sex, gay marriage, abortion rights and pornography.

Those who were less startled by threatening images and noises were more likely to favor foreign aid, liberal immigration policies, pacifism and gun control.

This study sounds real scientifical like. You're a conservative because you're frightened.

But looking closer at the description, I see that the images shown were of people in pain and the conservatives reacted more strongly negative than the lefties did. More concerned for fellow man?

Then how to explain the liberals’ assertion that Bush will take away all of our rights?

That is a fear.

Conversely, dull witted individuals who wouldn't recognize a threat to their health, wealth and way of life if it jumped up & bit 'em on the arse are more likely to be politically liberal.

Sounds right to me.

Conservatives are more attuned to mortal threats while liberals would stay in play and die in harmony with their Mother Earth God.

Leftists worship the likes of Castro, Che, and Stalin. Their agenda transcends whatever human suffering it might cause.

Is this a legitimate political ideology, or just a garden-variety personality disorder?

His definitions are upside down!

“more likely than others to support protective policies”

and then goes on to define “protective policies” as National Defense issue.

How about liberals liking “protective policies” such as SOCIALISM?

Recognizing threats is a survival instinct. Liberals, as a whole, tend not to have them at all or if they do, they get it backwards (like Bush is a threat, terrorists aren’t).

"Individuals who are more easily startled by threats are more likely than others to support protective policies, such as military spending, the Iraq War and the death penalty, finds a new study."

Well, not paying attention to threats, e.g., liberals, a person ends up like these morons who did not sense a threat.

Well...the liberal participants were not even shown pictures of what ‘frightens’ them the most more than anything in the world...(Bush, Palin and Conservatives)..so the test is a not dependable measure of liberal fear.

LOL!

Finish the though "were more supportive of pornography, premarital sex, gay marriage, and abortion."

Did they check them for THC? Which leads often to "What Me Worry?"

It could be like the movie Idiocracy, where the highly educated and intelligent people worry about the costs and timing of having kids and never do. Meanwhile drunken, unfaithful, stupid idiots are popping kids out like crazy.

Consequently the average intelligence of the nation declines at an alarming rate.

This article gets it TOTALLY BACKWARDS.

Conservatives are the individualists who are NOT afraid, and willing to fight.

Liberals are the fear based bunch who look to government to save them from everything.
