DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service.
Denial of Service occurs when you flood a system with so many requests that it’s interfaces to the Internet can’t handle the traffic.
This, in effect, makes it unavailable.
DDos is when a group of systems coordinate their attacks upon a particular targeted system.
It’s not a method that requires a great deal of skill.

Let me get this straight - because some state Democrat’s bratty grown son hacked into an email account illegally it’s okay since he didn’t have to go to that much trouble, and Bill O’Reilly only criticized the criminal because the email account happened to belong to a Republican political figure, and now he’s a target himself because of doing so?

People have suggested that this hacking incident was all staged by Republicans, so that they can further portray Palin as a huge victim, and further bash Democrats. That seems like a ridiculous suggestion to me, but...

So why do websites not structure their entry pages differently? For instance if one is not a member or has not already logged in as a member they go to one page and the members another. If hits one this one page of non members gets to be problem put it on another server.

When Free Republic was going down over and over again some of the freepers were posting on Yahoo FR that we were under DOS attacks.
As I understand it, you suggest that ‘thousands’ go to a certain site at certain times and it overwhelms the server??

We used to do pranks when I was a kid. We were stupid and we would have deserved to get whupped, but we never got caught. The worst thing we did was late one night we crawled under the cover of a neighbor’s boat and reversed the steering cable going back to the outboard.
What these jerks are doing is far worse, because they are shutting down a business, or at least part of a business.
