WASHINGTON In the aftermath of two major terrorist attacks on Western targets, America's counterterrorism community is warning that Al Qaeda may launch more overseas operations to influence the presidential elections in November.
Call it Osama bin Laden's "October surprise." In late August, during the weekend between the Democratic and Republican conventions, America's military and intelligence agencies intercepted a series of messages from Al Qaeda's leadership to intermediate members of the organization asking local cells to be prepared for imminent instructions.
An official familiar with the new intelligence said the message was picked up in multiple settings, from couriers to encrypted electronic communications to other means. "These are generic orders," the source said a distinction from the more specific intelligence about the location, time, and method of an attack. "It was, 'Be on notice. We may call upon you soon.' It was sent out on many channels."
Also, Yemen's national English-language newspaper is reporting that a spokesman for Yemen's Islamic Jihad, the Qaeda affiliate that claimed credit for last week's American embassy bombing in Sa'naa, is now publicly threatening to attack foreigners and high government officials if American and British diplomats do not leave the country.

Actually, if you wanted to inflict the maximum financial damage on the US, this would probably be the perfect time to fly a plane into a building.
They want McCain to win? Who the hell would trust a guy whose middle name is Hussein when our greatest threat is radical islam?
And yet 50% of the country is voting for this dipstick.
Never happen. They aren’t going to do anything that will screw up their guy’s chances of beating McCain/Palin.
financial meltdown...that’s unfortunately the time you really have to worry about an al qaeda attack
They only influence this could have is to pump up McCain's chances -- which I doubt they want!?!?!?
That was my first thought.
My only concern about that (I’ve thought that, too) is that BHO would say, “See the war on terror is over!”
I wondered what Obama talked about when he went to the Middle East.
The terrorists want Osama/Obama to win.
Yup, and while they’re at it, kill Moqtada al-Sadr and Zawahiri too. That would make my day.
Or the confirmation that Barack Obama is a mole for al qaeda.
Take this seriously.
It worked in Spain.
Hopefully our citizens are made of sterner stuff than the Spaniards, but we have not yet been tested.
Like most conservatives, I will never be cowed into submission by attacks on the US, but I fear that a lot of Democrats will choose the path of appeasement.
Or better yet go out and buy $700 billion worth of bad loans.
Indeed.
Over the last month, or so, I’ve noticed increased, unscheduled air marshall training at the local gun range...
FWIW.
Next case.
New video threatens large scale attacks. Just posted on FR.

Barry’s middle name being “Hussein” is news to most people.
Start an email chain, and include some pictures of Obama in Muslim dress.
I had an exchange with someone who was not aware that Obama has used drugs—even though he admitted doing so in one his own autobiographies!
As to an AQ attack—if it happened McCain would win in a landslide, no doubt. All he’d have to do is ask him during the subsequent debate [if it wasn’t cancelled], would be “Mr. Barrack Hussein Obama would you meet with Bin Laden without preconditions.” Game. Set. Match.
If Bin Laden were to be proven dead, though, before the election, I think that hurts McCain’s chances.
