Back Channels: Don't cry racism if Obama loses
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 9.24.08 | By Kevin Ferris

What a strange country. Last month, one of our two major political parties nominated an African American as its candidate for president of the United States.

Historic progress to be celebrated?

Apparently not. A few weeks and polls later, and some are already bemoaning the rampant racism that might keep a black man from ascending to the presidency.

Hey, Barack Obama could not have clinched the nomination without votes from white Americans. The other party isn't supposed to just concede the election based on skin color. Voters shouldn't have to choose based on race when they disagree on issues or believe a candidate isn't up to the job.

But expect to see the bemoaners looking to the heavens and saying, "We're not ready."

Baloney. Maybe it's Obama who's not ready and the people who recognize that - men and women, whites and blacks, Hispanics and Asians - are just fine.

There was no racial angst when three black Republicans fell short in statewide races in 2006. No "Shame on you, America" when Ken Blackwell and Lynn Swann lost for governor in Ohio and Pennsylvania, respectively, and Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele was defeated in his U.S. Senate race.

Republicans and conservatives don't count on the racial scorecard?

Sounds like Philly is gearing up for some pretty bad riots if Obama loses. I read another thread this morning about the latest officer shot execution-style there yesterday.

This is getting totally insane. Within my diverse (for lack of a better term) family, The Black and Asian members are solidly behind McCain while the White and Hispanic factions (which includes the Greens) are mixed but with a slight majority favoring Obama. This is not unusual for us as the same was true in 2000 and 2004. What is unusual are the taunts, particularly from the Greens, of "Uncle Tom" and "racist Asians" and "racists" that are really roiling the waters. There are splits here that will never heal. Sad.

This sentence totally nails it. This is exactly what the left is asking voters to do, and it is pure insanity.

If the dems knew we were a bunch of racists, then it was irresponsible of them to choose obama, since he could never win.

But if there aren’t enough racists and too many knuckleheads, obama will be elected.

But don’t worry, someone will dig up a drunk driving arrest of his a few days before and he will drop way down in the polls after the media pounds on it 24-7. Yeah, right.

He couldn't have gotten this far without white support.

Don't you get it? That is exactly how "The Man" works, he builds a brother up, only to knock him down.

I think it is racism that obamma lamma ding dong would never have made it this far if he was white.
No, he is the “magic negro”., and he uses that to his best advantage.

Thanks for a balanced view. I am guessing this Thanksgiving is going to be interesting at your house.

Obama couldn’t have gotten this far without those who support him because he is black. That includes black voters, white guilt voters, and all those air headed PC voters. Just remember, a vote against Obama is a vote for good, be it because of his black skin or because there is nothing worth voting for beneath it. Leftists may call you ignorant now, but if you vote for Obama, in about a year of so, you will call yourself stupid. Just ask Reagan Democrats who voted for Carter the first time.

Hmmmm... I’m utilizing the Martin Luther King criteria and voting for the person’s character and not for the color of their skin...

The racist component of this election all seems to originate in the Democratic Party. As was illustrated in the Yahoo poll last week the Republicans aren’t going to vote for Obama for ideological reasons. But there is a significant portion of white Democrats who will not vote for him because he is black. And let us not forget the vast majority of blacks who are voting for him because he is black. That is racism also and is the part of the story the MSM conveniently forgets to mention in its exposes of racism in this election.

Strangely, in the US of A we have been unwilling to condemn the actions of many blacks doing things that whites could never get away with. Je$$e Jackson is my prime example and remember that Je$$e also ran for president and again his shady dealings weren't exposed by the the media. While as we have seen Gov. Palin has her librarian trotted out on the nightly news to discuss what books are banned in the Wassilla library.

.. Americans have shown they will vote for the person they believe is ready for the job, the one who will best represent their interests, regardless of race. Don't blame them if Obama loses. Blame his poor judgment and lack of experience.
