With all the news focused on the economy and the President’s speech tonight, you may have missed the big news from Iraq:

The country that was once “on the brink of civil war”,

The country that defeatist Democrats like Harry Reid wrote off as “lost”,

The country that Senator Joe Biden wanted to divide into three ethnic-based regions (video from September 8, 2008—Biden brags: “My plan to partition Iraq is working.”)

That same country UNITED PEACEFULLY today to overwhelmingly pass a Provincial Election Law that will allow new elections to take place between now and January 31, 2009. The law will also give Iraqis more freedom in choosing their representatives.

President Bush congratulated the Iraqi Parliament for reaching this milestone in becoming a self-sustained democracy (Transcript)

Today's action demonstrates the ability of Iraq's leaders to work together for the good of the Iraqi people and represents further progress on political reconciliation. I congratulate the members of the Iraqi Council of Representatives for coming together to pass this significant legislation.

In other news, President Bush discussed free trade with Western Hemisphere leaders today at the Council of the Americas in New York City. (Transcript) and met with President Tony Saca of El Salvador (Transcript)

The President returned to the White House this afternoon where he will deliver a televised statement on the economy tonight at 9pm EST.

Republican Vice Presidential Nominee Gov. Sarah Palin was also in New York City today meeting with the leaders of Iraq, Pakistan, India and the Ukraine.

Quote of the Day:

President Bush: It's important for the American people to understand that exports benefit workers. Half of our growth last year was the result of trade. And therefore, it's in our interest to continue to open up markets, particularly in our own neighborhood. There are three free trade agreements pending in the Congress today: South Korea, Panama and Colombia. Obviously, two of those are with nations in our own hemisphere. The Colombia free trade agreement will be good for Colombia; it will be good for America. The President and I have worked diligently to make sure this is a fair agreement, and Congress needs to pass it.

Photos of the Day:

Republican vice presidential candidate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin meets with Iraq President Jalal Talabani at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Battery Park neighborhood September 24, 2008 in New York City.

"What's a Dose Thread?"

The Dose Threads (also known as "Sanity Island", "The Daily Dose of Sanity", or "The Dose" for short) are one of the staple threads of Free Republic.

FR Canteen A Few of FRs Finest Freeper Foxhole VetsCoR A Day in the Life of President Bush Pray for President Bush

Established in 2001, the Dose provides news and photos of the president that are regularly ignored or misrepresented by the mainstream media.

This thread also provides a safe haven--an island of sanity--for anyone seeking the company of friends, the fellowship of prayer or just the pleasure of a civilized conversation.

If you have no interest in this, please heed the warning above and stay off this thread.

Thank you.

President Bush walks with the El Salvador's President Antonio Saca, to make a statement on Temporary Protected Status, Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at the Council of the Americas in New York.

President Bush: I want to let my friend know, and the people of El Salvador, that the United States will extend TPS status to El Salvadoreans living in our country. This is a decision that was made to improve the lives of El Salvadoreans.

I'm proud to make this announcement with you standing by my side. You've been a very strong and courageous leader, and you have been a friend. And I know this is an issue of concern to you, because you care deeply about the people of your country. And so when you get back home, you can tell the people that TPS has been extended.

D’oh! Never mind! Someone was standing behind him right where a ponytail would be. I wish FR had an edit button. :-)

President George W. Bush is surrounded by leaders from the Western Hemisphere as he delivers a statement on free trade Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at the Council of the Americas in New York City.

President Bush: What's interesting about free and fair trade amongst the nations is that the people benefit. For example, the Central American-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement is in its early stages, but trade between participating countries with the United States is up 23 percent. That translates to jobs and prosperity. In the five years since the free trade agreement between the United States and Chile took effect, trade between our two nations has increased by more than 180 percent. And that's positive. In other words, these agreements are mutually beneficial. And most importantly, they help small business owners and workers and farmers and ranchers.
