ROANOKE, Va. Two weeks ago, Senator Barack Obamas presidential campaign gleefully publicized a spate of news reports about misleading and untruthful statements in the advertisements of his rival, Senator John McCain. Asked by a voter in New Hampshire if he would respond in kind, Mr. Obama said, I just have a different philosophy, Im going to respond with the truth, adding, Im not going to start making up lies about John McCain.

A much criticized, Spanish-language television advertisement wrongly links the views of Mr. McCain, who was a champion of the sweeping immigration overhaul pushed by President Bush, to those of Rush Limbaugh, a harsh critic of the approach, and, frequently, of Mr. McCain.
The advertisement implies Mr. Limbaugh is one of Mr. McCains Republican friends, and quotes Mr. Limbaugh as calling Mexicans Stupid and Unqualified. Mr. Limbaugh has written that his quotes were taken out of a context and that he was mocking the views of others.
In all, Mr. Obama has released at least five commercials that have been criticized as misleading or untruthful against Mr. McCains positions in the past two weeks. Mr. Obama drew complaints from many of the independent fact-checking groups and editorial writers who just two weeks ago were criticizing Mr. McCain for producing a large share of this years untruthful spots (Pants on Fire, the fact-checking Web site PolitiFact.com wrote of Mr. Obamas advertisement invoking Mr. Limbaugh; False! FactCheck.org said of his commercial on Social Security.)

Hmmmm....the NYT reporting this belatedly couldn’t have anything to do with the shellacking Michael Goldfarb gave ‘em, and their realization that the gig is up for pushing lies and not being challenged. They’re now going to go from being 98% in the tank for Obama to being 93% in the tank.
” In all, Mr. Obama has released at least five commercials that have been criticized as misleading or untruthful against Mr. McCains positions in the past two weeks. “
Good thing I was sitting down, while reading this from the NYT.
It’s actually pretty damning against Obama.
Unfortunately , the NYT couldn’t be completely truthful and describe Barry as a liar.
But, considering it’s from the NYT-this is ground breaking.
Do you have a link to the Goldfarb shellacking?
I’m sorry, but who is Michael Goldfarb?
I don’t see this as ‘ground-breaking’ - rather more likely it is a cynical ploy at CYA that they mistakenly think will insulate them from criticism when they go back into their normal pro-Obama campaign mode for the next six weeks...
No luck, history will show the Slimes as the paper that showed Pravda how.
is the Times getting ready to throw Obama under the bus???

Is it on page 9 hidden inbetween Go Obama Ads?
No, I suspect that they've published truth for their own sake. Now that they've published this piece, they can point it out as an example of how fair and even-handed they are.
Tomorrow’s Headlines:
Sun Rises in West
Paulson says he was “Just Kidding”
They will do anything to hide that, and they are being very, very successful at it.
Agreed. For them to actually admit that McCain was sounding the alarm years ago would happen when pigs fly through frozen hell.
Funny that...How outright smears and lies, become “misleading or untruthful statements” when “reported” by the NYTs....
So...when is McCain going to start sending out goons to threaten tv and radio stations with legal action if they don’t remove those ads?
Oh that’s right.
McCain has some class - and his skin is much thicker.
