WASHINGTON (AP) -- Even for a party whose president suffers dismal approval ratings, whose legislative wing lost control of Congress and whose presidential nominee trails in the polls, it was a remarkably bad day for Republicans.
... snip ...
"This is the president's own party," said Rep. Barney Frank, a top Democratic negotiator who attended both meetings. "I don't think a president has been repudiated so strongly by the congressional wing of his own party in a long time."

At one point in the White House meeting, according to two officials, McCain voiced support for Ryan's criticisms of the administration's proposal. Frank, a gruff Massachusetts liberal, angrily demanded to know what plan McCain favored.
These officials also said that as tempers flared, Bush struggled at times to maintain control.
At one point, several minutes into the session, Obama said it was time to hear from McCain. According to a Republican who was there, "all he said was, 'I support the principles that House Republicans are fighting for.'"
Some at the table took that to mean the conservatives' alternative proposal, which stands little chance of passage.

Another corporate welfare which Obama sides with Bush while Mccain oppose? oh btw, Mccain is “more of the same”, “3rd time of Bush”?!?!
Um...what polls are you looking at? All but Rassmussen now show the race tied or McCain ahead again.
That won't fly with me!
There is "Chaos" at the meetings, but it is only Republicans causing it?
Associated Press reporters Julie-Hirschfeld Davis and David Espo contributed to this report.
Google these two and you will find they are to the left of Hugo Chavez.
Miss Hyphened Last Name writes only articles that are negative about Republicans. Have a look:

Take your pick with David Espo.
The Dems are screwed any way they turn. Bush and McCain have them in the perfect trap.
I assume the Dems are now trying to minimize the damage, but they know the reins are in Bush/McCain's hands.
Bush set this up for a McCain win. It’s (retrospectively) obvious.
Politics isn’t poker, it’s Bridge. Bush made a low lead in trumps, and McCain is winning the trick.
Dawn—You’re right. McCain is running as a maverick, not a pubbie. Just as Palin took on and beat the Alaskan republican machine, it’s a good thing for McCain being seen as taking on Bush. Dems are having a very hard time getting it in their ideologically constrained brains that Bush is not running for president.
With one stroke McCain has shown leadership, separated himself from Bush even more than before, put dems on defensive for many news cycles and has nicely set up his inevitable debate with Onada.
AP’s story about Bush is presented as McCain negative, but it confirms he is not just like Bush. This is so cool because there are so few days left for campaigning. Dems will be hard pressed to mount any meaningful counter attack. The debate should seal it for McCain. Onada’s smarty pants quip “call me if you need me” quip should enable McCain to take control of the debate.
It will be interesting to see how the debate moderator tries to help Onada demonstrate a modicom of relevancy.

AP reporter is dizzy from all the spinning in this article.
Democrats have a majority in both houses
Vote for it.
They changed the title from, “Bad Day for GOP; Election lost - Obama moving to DC”
This whole issue should expose the Rats and their media synchophants for what they really are ...
This move by McCain (and maybe Bush) nullifies months of campaign rhetoric by obambi who was saying that McCain was a third Bush term. No wonder dimmies are having a cow.
Democrats KNOW public is against the bailout in the form they propose. They also know the public realizes the Dems are in charge and they desperately need to have this pass WITH bi partisan support.
It is actually the Republicans who hold the upper hand here.
If it is a dim and their lips are moving... they are lying.

Where are our founding fathers when we need them?
Fannie Mae, which was previously known as the Federal National Mortgage Association, and Freddie Mac, which was the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, have been criticized by rivals for exerting too much influence over their regulators.
''The regulator has not only been outmanned, it has been outlobbied,'' said Representative Richard H. Baker, the Louisiana Republican who has proposed legislation similar to the administration proposal and who leads a subcommittee that oversees the companies. ''Being underfunded does not explain how a glowing report of Freddie's operations was released only hours before the managerial upheaval that followed. This is not world-class regulatory work.''
Significant details must still be worked out before Congress can approve a bill. Among the groups denouncing the proposal today were the National Association of Home Builders and Congressional Democrats who fear that tighter regulation of the companies could sharply reduce their commitment to financing low-income and affordable housing.
''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.''
Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed. ''I don't see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing,'' Mr. Watt said.
