Meat must be rationed to four portions a week, says report on climate change
Guardian ^ | Sept. 30, 2008 | Juliette Jowit

People will have to be rationed to four modest portions of meat and one litre of milk a week if the world is to avoid run-away climate change, a major new report warns.

The report, by the Food Climate Research Network, based at the University of Surrey, also says total food consumption should be reduced, especially "low nutritional value" treats such as alcohol, sweets and chocolates.

It urges people to return to habits their mothers or grandmothers would have been familiar with: buying locally in-season products, cooking in bulk and in pots with lids or pressure cookers, avoiding waste and walking to the shops - alongside more modern tips such as using the microwave and internet shopping.

I’ll give up my food choices when they pry my chicken breast from my cold, dead, greasy hands!

Oh goodie ... a “report” from the dour, permanently pessimistic and joyless nannies advocating how to improve our lives.

LOL.

Here we go; New World Order socialism! Rationing for everyone!

How many kids can you have? Get a permit.

How many beers can you have? Get a permit.

Want to buy a new refrigerator? Get a permit.

Car need new tires? Get a permit.

Define modest and portion. A whole side of beef is not that big.

But, that’s not socialism, NO, NO, NO! That’s just your friendly government taking your money and telling you how to live (or die).

The fact of it is that with 6 billion people on the planet, it’s not easy to have everyone at an american standard of living, in terms of usage of scarce resources: growing land, soil, energy(the feed cycle uses more energy, so eating meat uses more than eating plants), and water.

Hopefully technological growth and productivity gains can make everyone wealthier. If not or until we get a technological utopia, as there are more americans, americans are eventuallly going to have to start living more modestly (national debt anyone?).

We escaped the whole malthusian prediction once because we had the green revolution. This time the constraint is water more than anything else. Maybe bring in icebergs from the asteroid belts?

The solution is simple: Soylent Green.

(I knew there was a reason it was green.)

Just pass a law that everyone has to take a dose of Beano after every meal. Problem solved.

I think they have a fantastic point. Obama should make this a central campaign issue.

My first paragraph got omitted! Rationing is clearly an absurd thought, but as costs of meat inputs rise, the price of meat. So the market is going to ration our meat consumption, like it or not.

The fact of it is that with 6 billion people on the planet...

If you believe in freedom then you let people make their own adjustments. They will. You don't have to tell them what they can and can't do, they figure it out quicker than you can.

...it’s not easy to have everyone at an american standard of living

Who is to say what is an "american standard of living"? That will evolve over time. The point is that no central authority should be in charge of deciding what that is or who gets what.
