I’ve long wondered what would happen if everyone who agrees with the constitution party (or libertation party, etc) would register in that party. They could still vote Republican just to keep the Democrats out of office. Then we would see if these third parties really do have enough support to be relevant.

Of course this would screw up the primaries for the Republicans, but it would be interesting to know just how many people are ready to switch parties.

"Of course this would screw up the primaries for the Republicans"

In some states you can eat your cake and have it to. You can register as a Republican in the primaries ... or even vote for the Republican regardless of affiliation in an open primary. They you will most likely have time to re-register into the Constitution Party to "send a message".

I have the luxury of living in California where McCain has no hope of winning. I was going to vote for him until he backed the Pig With Lipstick Act of 2008.

This time I may have to vote for the black candidate...

Alan Keyes.

Yeah, I know. Alan Keyes is a nutjob. But, dammit, he's our nutjob! ;-)

You know TMQ, all of these people are promising us stuff. I read the platform and it sounds good to me. It really limits the federal Government to do what the founding fathers meant for the Feds to do. I know the ACP could never win, but they DO have a platform that limits the Fed.

They lost me in 2004 with their mindless foaming at the mouth and not supporting the War.

I speak as someone that voted for Howard Phillips for president in two separate elections.

The Constitution Party lost me with their position on Iraq/Afghanistan.

Their platform does not even mention “Iraq” or “Afghanistan”, rather it talks in generalities. Kind of spineless of them not to take the matter on directly. However, what it does mention about war, betrays a bit of naivite...it fails to recognize the potential impact of 21st century tactics: WMDs, proxy armies, financial market manipulation and the slow defeat by demographics.

I don’t like McCain. But if there is one thing he understands it is external threats.

The Constipation Party has gotten taken over by people who are too far out there to be taken seriously. They should disband try to influence the GOP from within.

Regardless of what their platform says, helping Democrats win is contrary to their stated aims.

Great idea if your goal is to get Obama elected.

I'm voting McCain-Palin and hoping McCain wins and retires shortly after his inauguration.

The Constitution Party is a refreshing alternative to the GOP that has moved to liberalism and the democrat party that has moved unashamedly to Marxism. The government bailout has only reinforced this truth.

I would vote for Alan Keyes if he had a snow balls chance in even a moderatley warm oven.

He doesn’t so McCain gets my vote. Alan Keyes is about 100 times more of a conservative than John is but no chance of winning.

Defeat Obama Now, Fight McCain Later.

One battle at a time, we will crush the leftist hordes attacking our left flank, we will the take our position on the right of McCain and fight from there.

Your post might as well come from the enemy, they are cheering you right now.

Pat Paulsen for President
He’s back, and still better than all the rest.

Until the Constitution Party gets better organized it will rank up there with ol’ Pat.

I have been to there home page several times and like what I see. It is just no worth loosing th presidency over at this point.

In 2004, because I had grown so frustrated with the continuing growth of government, I actually registered for the Constitution Party.

The Party leadership - in my opinion - did nothing productive to actually attempt to cultivate a respectable third party alternative or even promote the established party values. They did, however, solicit me for funds about every 20 -30 days.

I’ve long wondered what would happen if everyone who agrees with the constitution party (or libertation party, etc) would register in that party. They could still vote Republican just to keep the Democrats out of office. Then we would see if these third parties really do have enough support to be relevant.

Third parties could become relevant in American elections if it were to be possible to use alliances like is done in other countries.

Thus, if there were an agreement between parties that whatever number of votes they get individually could totaled along with the votes of another party with similar views, then the combination of parties could decide upon a candidate who would represent the two parties in legislating or governing.

So then, if the libertarian party receives, say 3% of the votes, and the republican party receives another 48% of the votes, the combination of the two would be 51%, a majority. That wouldn't be enough to give the libertarians major clout in selecting the unifying candidate to represent both parties in government, but in due time, if people got to understand that libertarians have become a party with some clout, then eventually, there might be a lot more people registering as libertarian and voting as such. The number of registered libertarians might become more significant, and their clout in elections and government would be greater.

However, instead of a second or third party, it might be better for all parties concerned to just create factions or wings within an umbrella party. Thus, the republican party could be made up of a conservative wing, a libertarian wing, a constitution party wing, etc.

Same thing with the democrats, liberals, socialists, and communists (aren't they all right now in the same party right now?). They could form an alliance of parties that would then go into agreements for governing.

I'm not to keen on those ideas, but I believe it's the only way that third parties can become relevant in the U.S.
