McCain plans fiercer strategy against Obama

Article Launched: 10/03/2008 07:11:11 PM PDT

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain and his Republican allies are readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions about the Democrat's judgment, honesty and personal associations, several top Republicans said.

With just a month to go until Election Day, McCain's team has decided that its emphasis on the senator's biography as a war hero, experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick is insufficient to close a growing gap with Obama. The Republican's campaign also is eager to move the conversation away from the economy, an issue that strongly favors Obama and has helped him to a lead in many recent polls.

"We're going to get a little tougher," a senior Republican operative said, indicating that a fresh batch of TV ads are coming. "We've got to question this guy's associations. Very soon. There's no question that we have to change the subject here," said the operative, who was not authorized to discuss strategy and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

""We're going to get a little tougher"

The word "little" is in there. Patton never used the word "little."

Watch your mouth, there is mixed company here and I am one of them, I am sick of all the whining is all...they say women are whiners, geesh some of you men are worse! Whining makes us look weak, you wanna beat Obama, so do I, but don’t whine about McCain, it reminds me of when we take a peek over at DU and WE make fun of them for whining. We get excited when they do that because it shows WE are winning.

I think that he has recently discovered that he has a set … that set, known collectively, as Sarah Palin. ;-)

McCain missed his golden opportunity to win this election in a landslide.

He should have been “naming their names”, “making them famous”, and proposing plans for “reform”. Instead, he voted “yea” for the pork-filled government take-over bailout bill.

“Who is his liason to the Evangelical Community? How about the Conservative Catholic Community?”

For that matter, other than Sarah, who is his liason to the conservative community?

Exactly.

I like his Social Policy positions, and his committment to winning the Iraq War, but sheessshhh...he’s been blundering about the minefield for a solid week now...

If that bailout had failed, Obama would win the election in a walk, make no mistake about it.

PKM, you should know that I appreciate your opinion and trust your judgments. I hope you are right.

An awful lot of people watched the debate last night. I think two reasons for this have been overlooked. IMO the electorate is not sold on Obie, but have concerns about McCain's age and the melanoma. They must become comfortable with the thought of a Palin presidency. She went a long way toward handling those fears.

There is another group who I believe is looking for a reason to vote for McCain. Something that makes the close-pin vote acceptable.

That said, McCain has to take the bull by the horns. I hope he does.

Reread my last post. I don't care what you are sick of. Because you love him does not mean me or anyone else has too. I don't love you and I certainly ain't sad about that. I'm not whining, I'm stating facts. I don't like him. He is a liberal. I don't like liberals. I don't like dimocrats. It was only a couple of short years ago that the old liberal was flirting to join the dimocrat party. You can kiss him if you want. I am not. I will vote for him simply because I have no other choice to keep Obama out of the WH. IF there was another choice, I certainly would entertain looking at that person over this old fool.

Really. I mean I’m no fan of most of McCain’s politics - heck, his handling of the bailout was simply abysmal. To be fair me thinks only someone like Palin could really try to destroy the corruption and that if she were the head of the ticket.

But I’m not going sit at home pouting about things too much. The notion of Obama in power with a Democratic Congress and a Treasury Dept with nearly 1 trillion to blow is just too maddening.

All of the tough ads which are geared at narrative MUST be national in scope. One narrative though. It may be a mistake to try to link Obama to Fannie Mae AND narrate the ties to ayers and Wright ect. This would have been better as a trickle out months ago to a build up now but we are where we are. One way to do it would be to tie all associations (fannie Mae, Wright ect) into a broader “associations” narrative

This time there is no reason not to come out with both guns blaring. That last debate should have been delayed but then Obama knew that McCain had too much integrity to really attack so he wanted the debate but now the bill is passed and McCain can unload naming names of who caused the crises.

From your mouth to John's ears...

Bottom line - he opens a can of "whupass" and I open the wallet. I won't support a wimp, but I will support a winner.

Sarah, smack him upside the head for me, please!

lots of pessimism on this thread that he doesn’t have fight in him. He was doing more than fine before this economic issue took center stage. He then completely wussed out on the economic issues. He did very well in the debate on foreign policy, but terrible in the beginning with no clear message on the economic issue. I am hoping they turn this around now that the bill is signed. I was thrilled with the campaign they were running until this issue threw them off their game.

To be honest I am amazed that McCain is doing this well with the high odds against him.
